New Renewal Process Clarification Please?

Ok, here's my question, as my license expires at the end of October....

I filled out my online paperwork in May, and got the returned letter with bar code. I then heard that the process was changing on 09/01, so I've not done anything with that form.

Do I start over online on 09/01? Any direction would be much appreciated, because I cannot find further clarification on the DPS website.

Thanks!

The general consensus seems to be that if you filled out the online app before 9/1, you must take a renewal class. If you fill it out after 9/1, you don't. As far as I know, there's been no word from DPS on this subject though.

I have the same question as I have an August birthday... Went to check on a renewal course and was told by two gun shops that there were no renewal course available as the law was changing in September... I've paid the fee and got the bar code, as well... What do I do?

Call DPS and ask them. No better source than the horses mouth. Welcome to the forum.

Edited: Or just listen to Chas...

Sherrie from DPS addressed this during the Texas Firearm Instructors Conference. She said that people who apply prior to Sept. 1st can wait until after Sept. 1st and their licenses will be renewed. Nothing was said about the mechanics of this, but here is my guess.

HB48 requires DPS to create a document that will set out Texas law on the use of force and locations where a CHL cannot carry a handgun. This document will be available on the DPS website and as a downloadable pdf file. When applying online after Sept. 1st, I suspect that you will check a box indicating that you have read and understand it. For those who applied for renewal prior to Sept. 1st, they probably will have to submit (upload or mail) a statement or form acknowledging they have read and understand the DPS law overview.

Again, this is just speculation, based upon Sherrie's presentation.

My CHL expires 8/29. Although I could carry on my Utah CFP I went ahead and did it the old fashioned way just in case.

Already have my new license in the wallet. :thumbs2:

I have a gentleman whose license expired in May. He has done the online renewal, but should not be required to take the class after Sept 1. He emailed DPS for clarification, and got the standard response - This is only your 2nd renewal. You are required to take a 4 to 6 hour renewal class. You are exempt on your 3rd renewal.

So, no new info, and no help, from DPS.

DPS is responding under the current law and the 90 rule for missing application material could cause him a problem. If Sept. 1st is more than 90 days after he applied online for renewal, then DPS may well have closed his application prior to the new laws becoming effective.
