Hello friends,

Im looking for a place to shoot where I can practice drawing from my holster and none of the ranges I've been to in the D/FW area allow this.

Practicing drawing with an unloaded pistol in my living room doesnt really seem to accomplish anything other than going thru the motions and I doubt any criminals would pause for me while I get into the "ready position" position and line my sights up...

Do any of you know any ranges that DO allow this? Ive looked into shooting IDPA but the whole competition thing doesnt really appeal to me, although it seems thats about the only way I could get any good practice.

I would also be more than happy to pay someone if they would allow me to shoot on their land although I havnt had any luck with that approach either.

Ive looked into shooting IDPA but the whole competition thing doesnt really appeal to me, although it seems thats about the only way I could get any good practice. Confused

I faced the same dilemma as you a few years back. Finding a range that allows practicing defensive skills in the DFW area is all but impossible.

I finally decided to try IDPA and never regretted it for one moment. Even though IDPA is not a substitute for formal training, it will allow you to practice defensive and gun handling skills that are hard, if not impossible, for most of us to do otherwise.

I'm not an active member right now due to conflicts with my work schedule, but you can bet I'll be back as soon as it becomes possible...it's that much fun.

You don't have to get caught up in an equipment race to have fun shooting IDPA matches Use the same gear that you carry (or will carry) on a daily basis. And don't worry about being competitive. Instead, concentrate on being safe and having a good time. Above all, don't worry about your scores or finishing position. Besides, there is no way they can be worse than my first match.

I'm sure HighVelocity will be along shortly to invite you to check out Crosstimbers IDPA in Ft. Worth. They are a great bunch of people and will go out of their way to help a newcomer, so don't pass up the opportunity, I promise you won't regret it!

On of the ranges that Cross Timbers shoots at is Johnson County Shooting Sports Association.

You can practice from a holster at JSCCA once you join ( ) and have been cleared by a board member.

Check out http://www.dallaspistolclub.com/ in Carrollton. Private club, but the fees are quite reasonable if you shoot regularly.

DPC looks pretty cool, does it have anything less than 25yd lanes?

DPC has 5 action bays where you can shoot from less than a foot up to about 15 yards, it has a ~ 35 position bullseye range where you can shoot at 25 yards or 50 yards only, and it has a hundred yard range where you can shoot pistols or .22 rifles. You can set up shoot scenarios and shoot from the draw and on the move on all but the bullseye range. You can also set up steel plates to practice for our steel matches.

Yes. It has several bays that are available for members to shoot at any distance they like.

Membership has it's benefits over public ranges for many reasons in my opinion.

You gentleman obviously know quite a bit about DPC, and after looking at their site, I would agree that it looks great.

is there a way to go and shoot there a few times, just to feel it out.
on the website, I noticed that it basically said you have to attend a meeting, then sign up.
I'm poor, and don't want to drop that kind of cash without checking the place out first. any suggestions? thanks, in advance.

Would consider membership were it not for the restriction on centerfire rifle. Ban on 'dangerous ammo?' What is that? Isn't it all dangerous?

The Dallas Pistol Club is a private, members-only shooting club serving the North Texas Shooting Community.

Handguns chambered for approved calibers may be fired on the range facilities. No fully automatic weapons are authorized except for supervised law enforcement training. 22-caliber rifles may be used on certain ranges. Centerfire rifles of any type are prohibited. Dangerous ammunition will not be permitted. Shotguns may be used during an approved match and for supervised law enforcement training.

Our facilities include:

* 50-point, 25/50-yard precision range
* 25-point, 100-yard silhouette range
* Several bays for action pistol events
* 10-point airgun range


We host matches almost every weekend of the year in a wide variety of shooting disciplines.

I would suggest you go to one of the may matches that take place there. You can go shoot as a guest, or just watch. Make sure you bring eye and ear protection even if you are just there to watch though.

I wanted to bump this back to the top.I am also looking for a range that meets the above criteria.The IDPA appeals to me but the two CC guns I have are ported so they are out.I live on the Frisco /Little Elm /The Colony border area.The closer it is the more I can shoot.I do not mind paying a reasonable fee for a private club.I also do not want to be forced to buy their over priced ammo.Is there any help for me.Thanks in advance!!
