Hi Team: Im told that you can start using the Glocks right out of the box with out breaking down & lubing. Is this true? What is the best way to break a Glock in right out of the box new?

What I did with my Glock is the same I do with any new or new to me gun. I field strip, clean, inspect and lube where needed. Then shoot about 100 rounds through it if no hickups then it's GTG. 1911s are the exception to this I usually run 500 before considering GTG. I also do a thorough cleaning afterwards to check for anything that's out of whack.

Seriously though, Glock recommends the following:

Your GLOCK pistol should be field stripped, cleaned and lubricated as follows:
1. when brand new, before the first time it is fired, plus
2. at least once a month, plus
3. after each time it is fired, plus
4. as required. This is determined by the pistol's exposure to adverse conditions such as rain, snow, perspiration, salt water, dust, lint, etc.

That said, I initially lube my Glocks, prior to taking them out the first time, making sure to leave in the factory grease as recommended by Glock. That grease is copper colored. You will see it on the slide rails and it will eventually disappear after use.

I imagine that the thought of not doing any cleaning / lubing is probably because the factory put that lubrication there already. Would it hurt to take a Glock and fire it without first doing a quick field strip / lube? Probably not. I know of several who have done this and they end up with a little more wear where metal meets metal after the first few hundred rounds. However, putting a healthy dose of lube where recommended before first shoot isn't going to hurt either. It can only help.

There are a lot of pistols that can be fired right out of the box and work fine. In general, they will work better if you field strip, clean, and lube. You might end up with problems starting out that shouldn't be blamed on the gun.

While Glocks do run best on the "dry" side, I always field strip, clean/lube per guidelines and then shoot........you never know what you might find with a new purchase, especially if there is a chance it may have been handled by employees or potential customers. And there have been some guns passing QA and shipping that frankly never should have left the factory (not necessarily Glocks).....perhaps in the rush to get them out during all the panic buying.

But would it hurt the Glock to run some rounds through it right out of the box......probably not.

They copper ish lube they have in there is great to break it (whatever that means) but I usually take it off after the first few outings. As a general statement, you can just pick up and use a glock in just about any condition with/without a backstory.

There shouldn't be any break in. It just works.


I don't clean my non-duty Glocks after every firing for the same reason I don't change my oil after every trip to work.

How many experience spent casings coming back at you?

I made sure I dumped 500 rounds out of my duty glock before putting it into service.

NO BTF (Brass To Face) shooting the below guns with the below ammo listed:

GEN3 G34 (oldest Glock I have, prior to any changes using GEN4 parts)
GEN4 G34 (OD)
GEN4 G17 (OD)
GEN4 G26 (OD)

Ammo used:
Range/Ball - Winchester, PMC, S&B, Federal American Eagle
Defense/HP - Hornady Critical Defense 110 GR FTX, Winchester Ranger 124 GR SXT +P

I agree I don't clean it until I've shot a few hundred rounds. I was told by Glock that they expected you to go shooting on the way home from the dealer.

I'm not sure, but I think you are saying you did not have BTF with any of your pistols?

Abraham, you can call Glock if the brass is hitting you in the face and they may send you a new ejector or have you send it in. it is not uncommon.

Correct, no BTF with any of my Glocks ...........thank goodness. I was very hesitant to buy the GEN4s but did so just recently.

Soooooooooo many reports of BTF, among other issues. It was hard to tell which ones were old issues and have since been rectified and which were still happening.

Thanks everybody! I broke down my G22 Gen4 what I got it 2 months ago new to change the mag release button to left handed & noticed the copper colored grease. I left it as is & hit the recomended lube spots with a little oil. Looks like I did the right thing. I getting the G23 Gen4 for X-Mass & wanted to be sure I started off right. I learned a lot from all of your post. Thanks again.
PS: I fell in love with Glocks sense my first G17 9mm.)

OldCannon - That is what I did when I first got My new G17 Gen4. I fired 150rounds at 2 different vivits to the range. Then I cleaned & lubed it.Thanks
