This happened about 2 miles from me, and just about the time I get to work.

Prayers for the family of the deceased, and prayers for the injured.

First thought is for the welfare of everyone there. This is a tragic situation, and should never happen. Not that there is a 'good time' for this, but the holidays makes it much worse for the families, I'm sure.
But the analyst in me looks a bit deeper...
A quick check of the texas3006.com website shows that
this location is posted, so the one thing that the assailant might have known was that there were ZERO legal concealed carry holders around to stop him.
Could a CHL holder have stopped him? Maybe so, maybe not...but the probability that a CHL holder could have stopped him increases dramatically if one had been allowed to carry in that hospital.
Why don't people learn that when you create gun free zones, nothing good can come from it?!?

Actually, I'm fairly familiar with the layout of that campus. This happened across the street from the main hospital, and is in a building that doesn't appear to be posted.

I've wondered about the "North Wing" myself. I haven't had the need to visit it in a while, although mrs surv has taken my mom there quite a few times in the last 5-6 years. As for the main building on the South side of Hwy 80, I carried there many, many times entering the South entrance, only to realize after a few years they were "technically" posted, if not "correctly". Up until last year when the "big uglies" went up on all the South entrances, the only signage was in the form of a small (about letter sized) white paint (correct worded) on a clear, sliding glass door that moved before you could even notice or read it ... and the background was a light colored carpet. After carrying there for several years I had a chat with one of the older security guys after I finally noticed the correct worded, but not so correct display on the front entrance. I wasn't carrying that night so thought a conversation would be interesting. His opinion was that "the admin should take that silly sign down", and his Longview PD "assistant" for the night (seemed to be very much a rookie) began to inform us both that it was illegal for anyone but law enforcement to carry a handgun into any hospital in the state. The "old guy" just gave me a wink and told the LPD officer that he may just need to brush up on some of the carry laws before he either made a fool of himself or cost the city a lawsuit. That was actually the night I stopped carrying at GS. Then they had to go all the way to the metal detector and silly pocket knife ban after 9:00 pm. I suppose that will become a 24/7 ban now.
On a side note, in the last three months time, my Mom has made 4 trips (each 5-7 days) to GS, and either me or mrs surv has spent a good part of every one of those days or nights with her. It's a wonder we missed this horrible event.

Sad day, the guy was supposedly high on bath salts, what the motive was we may never know. GS is only posted on the emergency room entrance but I have been there in awhile. I always use other unposted low traffic entrances when I go.
