Time to go hog hunting!!!!

Both shoot great and I'm looking forward to working up a good hog load for both of them. Friend of my fathers left them to him and he's passed them on to me. A few other things will be coming as well.

Very nice. I haven't seen the 44Mag Carbine in a long time. I almost forgot they made it.

I would think carbines in .357 mag and .44 mag would be very popular. I would want one in .357. Surprised someone doesn't make them as non-lever firearms.... Hoping for a lever action in .357 someday.

I think the .357 case might be a little too long for a small carbine like this.

Well if I got one in .44 magnum for Christmas, I wouldn't be unhappy!

I don't think it's any longer than a .44 magnum, and the carbine pictured above is a .44 magnum.

You are correct. They are about the same OAL.

Very Nice. The Ruger 99 Deerfield is one of the rifles I regret not buying years ago. As you stated yours is the Deerstalker only made in 1961and 1962 and hard to find. I bought a Ruger SBH in 1969 intending to buy a carbine in the same caliber, I considered a Marlin 336T and didn't buy it either. Good Luck Hog Hunting! Post some pics if you get one.

After doing a bit of research it dawned on me that while one might be inclined to describe this rifle as a 10/22 on steroids it is actually the other way around.

Taking the rifle apart and checking out all the internals was actually a pleasure. Don't get me wrong, it has some 3 handed procedures to get it apart but it's pretty simple. Clearing a double feed is next to impossible without a screwdriver. I learned this while cycling it with dummy rounds. If you wuss out and don't really rack the bolt to throw the case free you're going to have issues.

Put about 100rds through it last week and it shoots great. Very soft recoil. I've been reading that it is very ammo sensitive but I can't find the supposed perfect 250gr bullet during the current drought. It did OK with the 180gr factory loads I put through it but my google-fu tells me that a hot 250gr load is the key. Found powder and some 230gr and 300gr bullets. I'll give them a work up and see what happens.

Either way...I love old fudd-esque rifles.

Sweet guns, especially the carbine due to its relative rarity. .44 Mag should be good hog medicine.

Awesome guns! I went the .357 route on my pair of matching sidearm & long gun and I carry these every day out in the fields. I already had three other handguns in .357 and didn't want to stock another caliber but I thought long and hard on the 44 Mag and 45 Colt.
