New Mossberg 500 furniture

I went to the club range the last warm Saturday to do some .22 plinking and I tool along my shotgun in case anyone showed up and wanted to shoot some skeet and/or trap. After a few hours by myself breaking the birds that got away with my Marlin 39A a friend who I've shot skeet/trap with several times showed up with his grandson to shoot some birds. The three of us took turns pulling targets and shooting skeet.

After stage 3 I cleared my shotgun and went to put it in the rack so I could pull for the next guy and when I sat it down and the wood forend came apart. It had split down the bottom and broken in two. My buddy let me use his O/U to complete the round, but I kept trying to work the action on doubles - it felt odd not having anything to do between shots.

I ordered a "Hogue Stock Mossberg 500 Overrubber Shotgun Stock Kit with Forend" along with the Adaptor Nut and will replace the wood furniture with the new black furniture this weekend. Does anyone have any experience with this Hogue stock and forend? Will the gun feel too much different - cheek weld, action, mounting to the shoulder, etc.?

Finally, since I am going from an acceptable wood pump action shotgun to an EBS (evil black shotgun), are there any special permits required. Do I need to put a trigger lock on it so it won't go out and start shooting people?

Just want to be safe... :evil2:

I think as long as its not a SOSBHOIJWABIMLBP (sawed off short barrel hang on I just whizzed a bit in my little boy pants) shotgun, you're fine! Of course, you're going to have to post pics now.

The new EBF (evil black furniture) is due to arrive this week. Since I am iced in and not working here are some photos of the current state.

This is where the crack happened - right down the middle of the forend.

This is my "Shotgun Joe Approved" stock - of course ol' Shotgun Joe only recommends double barrels, but I'm sure he would approve a wood pump - just don't tell him I removed the plug.

And here is the overall state of my broken gun. :cryin

The only word of warning I have for you is some brands (phoenix?) will block you out of the chamber release button.
Not a good thing for a HD shotgun. I had to apply liberal amounts of chop saw and file to correct...

Topbuilder,

Are you talking about the brand of the replacement stock?

I have Hogue on order and all reviews at Amazon say it fits like the OEM. The only problems reported were a) stock screw too short for people converting a pistol grip to the full stock and b) the forend is made for the 7 1/4" tube, and I ordered the adaptor nut since I have a 6 3/4" tube.

I will make sure the stock doesn't block anything on the trigger group, thanks for the heads up. :tiphat:

No, I can't do that, the guys at the skeet range would laugh at me.

The delivery fairy came today, got it installed and ready for the range. No issues doing the install except the screw cap on the end of the magazine was a bear to get off, had to use channel lock pliers and tape to keep from dinging it up. 13mm socket fit the stock screw making it easy to get the old stock off and the new one installed. I may have to make a magazine tube wrench to ensure the new adapter nut stays tight, just had to guesstmate the torque on that.

I prefer the look of the wood, but I would bet this will hold up a long time. Eager to go shoot it but since there are hills and valleys on the icy backwoods road to my range it will have to wait. The pull seems about the same, the more grip on the end of the stock may take some getting used to so I don't catch it on my clothes as I bring it to my shoulder.

Tear down, removal of old stock, putting on the new forend and stock took all of 20 minutes after I found my socket set. Easy to do and I like the results.

Always great fun to watch someone show up to shoot skeet with a pistol-gripped shotgun, no shoulder stock... and then watch everyone else's jaw drop when the dude cleans house on the clays. :biggrinjester:

It'd be even bigger fun for me if I was good enough with a pistol-grip shotgun to be able to BE that guy, but I can't have everything, I suppose... :cryin

JS, I didn't know that guy exists. I've been thinking of getting a 10gague just to get more BBs hurled at those darn clays.

It's all right though, the best part of shotgun shooting is the people I shoot with, we give each other heck, and pointers.
