I remember reading that most of the lead used for making ammunition has come from recycled batteries and the lead weights used for balancing wheels. If that's even true, where do they think that lead comes from and where do they plan on getting it now? Or is that another plan to phase/force out those products?

My understanding is a lot of lead is imported. That doesn't appear to be changing anytime soon.

There has been a lot of hand-wringing and bed wetting over the Doe Run plant closing down.

When I first heard about the plant closing I started to do my own fact checking, rather than rely on people crying "Obama is doing a back-door gun grab!" (Shame on you Col. Alan West for being part of that crowd. I thought you were better than that). The ammunition makers were the first to come out and say that the plant closure would not affect them. I tend to think that if ALL ammunition makers say the same thing it is probably true. What would be the benefit of them lying about it? Second, the facts in the story that remington79 posted have been out there - just not at the top of most Google searches. The EPA (which needs to be defunded) had their sights set on that plant for quite a while. The COMPANY decided that closing the smelter made more economic sense than putting in all of the equipment to bring them into EPA compliance.

As has been stated, there is NOT a lead shortage. OK - there probably is now that shooters/hand loaders are panicking and hoarding scrap lead. Shooters need to get the word out that this is NOT something that the Obama administration initiated and there is NOT a shortage of lead. Yes, at some point in the future other states will look at California's legislation and start calling for a replacement to the lead projectile. It is almost a foregone conclusion IMHO that it will happen.

For now, if you want to worry about "back-door gun grabs", keep an eye open for legislation to levy heavy federal taxes on factory ammunition, gun powder and primers. THAT is where we need to vigilant.
