Was in Austin today, so I stopped by GT Distributors.
They had Atlanta PD trade in M&P 40s for sale. Pretty good condition, faded night sights, 3 magazines.
But for less than $350 out the door, I couldn't resist.

Good deal on a good pistol. Just wondering what happens when a LEO sees the Atlanta Police markings on a pistol like that? Or any other police trade in for that matter. Do you have to keep the receipt with you?

I assume they would just run the serial number to verify it isn't stolen... the only inconvenience might be that it could cause them to run it even if they had no reason to suspect anything wrong.

I bet most LEO are familiar enough with police trade ins that they wouldn't give it a second thought.

Yep. Heck, in 5 1/2 years I've never had an Leo even ask to see my gun.
If one wasn't aware of trade ins, a quick run of the numbers would prove it wasn't stolen.
Complete non issue, IMO.

There was a tiny bit of surface rust on the guide rod assembly, takedown lever and sights. Gun looks like it was carried a lot and shot maybe twice. Barrel looked pristine. It came right off and the gun looks great now.

You might have lucked out by getting an administrator's gun, although with an M&P it's pretty hard to tell - the finish is pretty durable.
It would be a good idea to put a coat of a good rust preventative on it to keep the rust from recurring. It has a tendency to do that in places that have rusted before.

Looks like GT may have purchased a few. The website says "Atlanta Police Trade in SWM&P .40 Pistols with 3 magazines"
Wonder what they traded them in for?
Never mind. Found the answer.
In July 2013 Glock secured a contract with the Atlanta Police Department for an order of 2300 full size Glock 22 Generation 4's to replace the Smith & Wesson M&P .40. This breaks a 70+ year relationship between Smith & Wesson and the APD. The Glock 22 is being phased into service within the department over time. The Glock 22 is chambered in the .40 caliber Smith & Wesson round like the M&P that it replaces. APD SWAT adopted the full size Glock 21 gen 4 due to mission-specific requirements that favor the .45 ACP round over the S&W .40 caliber round.

There were at least 2 left on the shelf on Saturday after i picked mine up, and for all I know they have more in the back.
Regarding switching to Glocks: I'm sure they were cut a sweet deal to do so, since they only picked up the M&Ps in 2008 iirc.
My EDC is a G19 but I couldn't resist a good pistol with night sights for so cheap.
I'm reading that swapping to .357 sig only requires a barrel swap, and a switch to 9mm only takes a barrel and magazines. I didn't own a .40 so I was happy to finally pick one up, but I'm pretty tempted to pick up the conversion barrels for it too just for grins.

May also want to change out the extractor. The .40 extractor will tend to throw the 9s closer to your face. If you switch the barrel back the .40 the 9 extractor will still work fine on the .40 round.
