I visited the Sports Authority (formerly Oshmans) on I-45 in Spring this weekend and was suprised to see the sporting goods department with empty handgun cases. I have window shopped there in the past and they had a decent variety on hand.

Does anybody know if they have completely stopped selling handguns?

I seem to remember this particular store was robbed of several firearms last year. They still had rifles and shotguns on display, but the glass counters were empty.

The one near me never had handguns since they opened a few years ago.
Their long-gun stock looks pretty picked over, like they are not replenishing. I stop by every so often to see if they might be closing those out.

I think it was around spring 06 when they decided to stop carrying handguns. They still carry ammo.

Walmart ammo sales to stop on Telephone Rd Pearland store.

I spoke to an employee at the Gulf Frwy SA. He said it was a mgt decision. Some stores will contiune to sell handguns he thought.

Incidently, The Pearland Wal Mart located on the north side of the city on Telephone road apparrently is discontinuing ammo sales. They are not repenishing their stock and have very few ammo boxes left. They have disassembled their knife/ammo counter. The other two Pearland stores are unchanged.

I wonder if it's due to their location with easy access from the Houston/Telephone Rd area. Anybody know?

The Sports Authority in Arlington near Parks Mall sells rifles, but no handguns.

Same situation like Dick's Sporting Goods. They use to sell handgun, but corporate stop the sale of handguns last year.

This is all very interesting. Sports Authority stopped selling handguns in New Jersey back on 1999, 2000 or so. The line I got was that they were taking all the handguns in all the stores in the country and shipping them off for sale in Alaska. Guess they missed a few stores, err, states.

Sports Authority hasn't been around here very long (DFW area). They took over Oshman's stores 2 or 3 years ago. Not sure about the time. From the very beginning it seemed they were just getting rid of the handguns left over and not restocking.

the one i frequent pull them all off the shelf. I happened to go in the day they pulled them and the guy said if i was looking to buy one that it was the last day before the sent them out. Last chance.

I dont know where they were sending them to. Just what i was told.

But its hearsay info so take it with a grain of salt. ;-)

The the guy in the store in Austin told me that after Katrina, they started locking all handguns in a safe somewhere else in the store. Several stores in Louisiana were looted and all the guns were stolen. After that, they just stopped selling handguns. Too much liability if they are stolen.

Their pistols were way overpriced anyway....Some of their Rifles "back in the days" were priced competively though.....

In yuppieville the ever so P.C. city of Frisco, Tx, there is only one place that sells pistols. A pawn shop with an occasional over priced used gun for sale. The, so called, sports stores ( Dick's & Sports Authority) sell overpriced golfing, tennis, tiddly winks equiptment and fancy sports clothing like that silly looking stuff bicyclists wear.
Just down the road in Plano there is a range that sells all types of guns, a real gun store, two Academys and several pawn shops where you can buy guns. In fact just about every suburb in this area has some type of gun store but not Frisco.
But we do have a huge soccer field sitting on some very expensive land!

There are several reasons I'm glad I moved from Frisco in 2000. Traffic is at the top of the list. I remember when you could see the stars in the night sky in Frisco.
