AK on the way

Ok, I finally broke down and have a Yugo M70AB2 underfolder en route. Should be here this week and I expect it'll look exactly like this one:
For you AK folks: what ammo should I avoid? I've read rumblings online that the Herters brand is suspicious of being corrosive. It's also been noted by some that the Wolf Classic appears to be underpowered (lower velocities and lower POI). I was just going to go ahead and get some Wolf polyformance FMJ, but I'd hate to get a 1/2 crate (500) only to find out there's an issue with it and have someone say "oh... you didn't know this?"!
Any other pointers I should know about this beastie? I was just going to field strip clean & lube before the inaugural range trip. Any special tools or such that I might need for the sights or anything?

Wolf, Tulamo, Silver Bear, Monarch, all seem great. I haven't found anything an AK won't fire. Have never used anything except steel case though. Never seen anything corrosive but I am sure there are some old stock packed in cans from the 70's that I would avoid. Mine has a cleaning kit that is in the stock. I think the AK is the greatest bargain in shooting, 25 cents a round is plenty. No need to worry about reloading. Some of them are a little finnicky with magazines. I have a K-Var and it likes the Bulgarian mags. I have a red dot on mine and it is amazingly accurate. YouTube is your friend for cleaning if it doesn't come with a manual. Cleaning is super easy. Enjoy. It's a great rifle. As far as the sights, some of them are canted a little. The better quality ones when you look down the barrel the front sight is perfectly straight up and down.

Congratulations. Ammo is not a problem with this gun. It is rarely persnickety about anything, especially ammo.
This would be an excellent chance to learn to run your AK:

That forum is a good place to ask questions about the AK as well.

Good to know about the ammo. I was aware of the possibility of the canted front sight, but I think that's fixable. I'm searching around for Yugo bolt hold-open mags since this is a Yugo AK. I believe Magpul is now delivering AK30 mags as well, though I've not really heard anything about them yet. I'm not real worried about takedown/cleaning as I have other semi-auto rifles which I fiddle with.

Get an
AK front-sight tool and a cleaning kit and you should be set.
I've seen those tools online. I wonder if I can find one here at a local gun store. I already have 30 cal cleaning gear (I have a FAL and a Garand), but is there a special chamber brush or something?
So does everyone just 25m zero or do you all set up the sights as is?

Getting it from J&G Sales online. All the ones being sold at gunbroker and texasguntrader were priced stupidly to say the least. I'm getting this 'new' one for at leat $150 less than a used one!

I'd like to shoot it for a bit first before I get into anything, but I can see something like that in my future.

I noticed that private sellers and dealers of AK-types were unrealistically pricing their guns on the gun trader/auction web sites. After spending a couple of hours researching AK variants, I'm more confused than ever - there's pre-ban, post-ban, and most 'new' ones sold are put together from parts unless you spend a fortune for a numbers-matching version. Some say the Romanian versions aren't the best, others speak highly of them.

.
I'd love to have something that shoots 7.62x39 - looking at RPKs.

You might find this helpful, especially the thumb-tacked threads.
http://www.combativestraininggroup.com/forum/ak-rifles/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; SteveM (also on this board) seems to live and breath AKs, so he usually has latest info on what's avail and prices and such. I may be putting words in his mouth, but I recall him telling me that recent prodution runs of Romanian AKs are better than the ones done a few years ago. I bought the cheapest AK I could find, from J&G Sales, in 2008 or so. It was Romanian, and I did have to fiddle with the mag catch a bit, but since then it has been through lots of rounds, rain/dirt/dust/heat, etc etc, and it just runs and runs. I would not be afraid to buy another. I did buy a Yugo AK pistol, and they seem very solid, a Yugo rifle looks like it would be pretty decent.

I have that exact Yugo and mine has digested anything and everything I have thrown at it. It is a great gun. I got mine back before all the gun rushes started and IIRC paid about $400 or so for it. I also have a WASR (Romanian receiver) and have never had any trouble with it at all. You will enjoy the Yugo. Get a small bag to carry it in. With the stock folded it is really small.

The only thing my Mak doesn't care to digest are the PPU 123gr SPRN rounds. The short round bullet in them gets hung up and fails to feed. Once in the chamber, they are some of the more accurate rounds I've fired. Handed mine off to a friend with a SKS that likes em just fine.
The Herters/Tula is ok. Cheap, feeds fine, fires fine, groups like a shotgun :)
Federal Fusion and the Hornady SST rounds are the good accurate loads for when I take it out hunting pigs. I've a slight preference for the Hornady rounds mainly on the price/performance ratio. The Federals are a little pricier.
