Hmmm. Sounds familiar somehow, can't quite put my finger on it.
Can you access your weapon while "under pressure?"

It's a little different when you have a uniformed officer. Either way, he had the right to shoot the guy, as would a CHL IF the CHL had not been the one to start the fight.

Yep, I think I'd seriously consider shooting someone who was pounding my erstwhile innocent head on the pavement.

the people videotaping seemed to think that the police officer did start the fight.... but yeah the guy was an idiot for keeping it going....

Had the same thought after watching video and reading story.

It makes me sick to hear the man and woman comment about the cops "aggressive stance". The guy was obviously resisting. Why interfere? The fact that the cop acknowledged them put his life in danger. Sounds like the deceased was fired up after fighting with the cabby - whether justified or not - so his own action put him in that situation.

Very sad case.
It seems to me the firefighter was possibly impaired by alcohol. He's not moving very fast, and seemed to move clumsily, just resisting, from the short clip I saw.
Instead of video taping, be a good friend, step in and help get your friend under control, if necessary help the officer restrain him until things can get sorted.

He had a .21 BAC.
The worst of this is that the officer asks for help and they just stand there. While they certainly aren't obligated to help him, I bet they wish their friend wasn't dead...and helping the good guy here might have saved the idiot''s life.

Seems pretty simple to me - beat on a cop, get shot. Does anyone actually expect some other outcome?

Hhhhhhmmmmm, Circumstance is very different to me but includes similar events. Beat on cab driver and then a cop, don't be surprised if you get shot. Next!

That's true, and I think anyone would agree that getting your head pounded on concrete could put anyone in reasonable fear of their life, however there's a big difference with him being a uniformed officer vs. a citizen. The officer will go home that night, probably wind up on desk duty or administrative leave until the investigation is concluded, without any charges ever being filed...a CHL holder in the same circumstance is probably going to be arrested, taken to jail, have to retain legal counsel at considerable expense, go through a bail hearing, and hopefully be released on his own recognizance, but more likely after posting bail, while awaiting the outcome of the investigation, and even if charges are dropped, likely face a costly civil suit. LEO's are somewhat of a protected class in that regard.

That would be a maybe/maybe not. If you are ever in this situation and the police ask you if you need to be taken to hospital, say yes! Even if you think you are going to be OK. You want to show your injuries were severe enough that you needed medical treatment. Even if the hospital show your injuries are minor, it is better than admitting you needed no hospital treatment.
While it is true that one should always be prepared to "take a ride" in a self defense situation, there is no certainty this will occur. It will depend on several factors and what the police are instructed to do by their command. They have great latitude in these matters. Don't talk yourself into going to jail. Short and sweet. I was afraid of being killed, it was the only way I could stop the attack. Get attorney... say nothing else, not even details on how it happened.

Americans' doing what they do best. Absolutely nothing. Standing around video taping and sputtering meaningless statements while another American, a uniformed LEO in this incident, is clearly struggling trying to gain control of a situation that turned very bad. They could have helped the American LEO. They should have helped the American LEO.
Way to go American bystanders! Stand around and do nothing like mindless thoughtless cowards all wrapped up in your own little world and way too important to help your fellow man.
I'm glad the LEO was able to defend himself since nobody else cared.

rbwhatever1,
Sad state of affairs isn't it? It's amazing to me how many would do the same.
