So currently I own a shield 9MM, but want to add another pistol to the lineup. I purchased my shield with intent to use as my EDC once my CHL comes in. I don't think that will change. I just want another to keep at home and take to the range and maybe as an EDC during the winter months.

I just need a little convincing on which one.

I have my heart set out on the XD-M 4.5" .45 acp for the pure bravado of it and the incredible stopping power.

I know the .40 has some stopping power with a couple more rounds capacity, ammo a little cheaper

...and then there is the 9mm, which has a 19 round plus 1 in the pipe capacity. ammo even a little bit cheaper but hard to come by these days. especially to be feeding it 20 rounds at a time.

I don't know if I can justify the 9mm since I already have my shield which is 8+1 on the extended mag, but damn....20 rounds

Just want to get some opinions.

I use to have pistols in all different calibers. Then a light in my head went ding and I realized it was a pain to stock ammo. Now it's plain and simple. Keep cases of 9mm and don't stop. Also since I have 6 XDMs I can also use the same mag for them all. No brainer for me

I have the XDM 9mm with the 4.5" barrel. I love having 19 shots per mag. Love it so much I purchased more mags and now have 7 fully loaded for my trip to the range tomorrow. It is my favorite gun.

I bought a Glock 26 last year and will be shooting it tomorrow also. I thought I might like it as well as the XDM, but being a smaller gun, it is different.

I stock 2 calibers of ammo. 9mm and .38 special. My latest purchase was a S&W 642 PC gun. I love it too.

I shoot an XDM 9mm Compact (3.8"). It has a 13 and 1 capacity with the flush mag and 19 and 1 with the extended mag.

It's my EDC (normally with the flush mag). I also own a S&W Bodyguard but very seldom use it because the XDM a great carry weapon.

I am not having trouble finding 9mm in target rounds or self defense rounds. Try Freedom Munitions, Lucky Gunner, or Ammo to Go (all on line outlets) if you're having trouble finding 9mm.

My two cents.

Since you already have (and presumably like) the S&W also take a close look at full size M&P. With Apex Tactical trigger kit it will keep up with XDM performance wise and M&P + Apex = about same cost as XDM.

hmmmmm? I haven't given that much thought but sounds like a good idea too. Gonna look into it.

IMO, I would avoid the 40. The recoil is higher than the 9 or 45 pistols. I used to think I liked 40 caliber, but have slowly migrated back to either 9 or 45 or both. I got tired of the higher recoil yet still feeling like I was compromising on capacity. If I am going to accept less capacity, I figure I might as well go to 45.

The XDm 3.8 in 9mm is an excellent gun. It also small enough to still be a concealed carry option. I the full size XDm 9mm also and I am not any more or less accurate with either one. I like the high capacity. I have an older XD 45 as goto bedside gun. IMO, If the grip size, angle, and such suit you, the XDm pistols are excellent guns.

One of my two primary carry guns is an XD-M .45 Compact 3.8. It is a most excellent pistol; accurate and very soft shooting. 9+1 in the compact magazine, plus 13 rounds in the backup mag. It's also extremely reliable. And, it is a good looking gun......if that counts for anything. Takedown is simpler than either the M&P line (I have an M&P45), or the Glock (ours is a Gen 3 19). I REALLY like mine a lot.
