Hey Charles, you got that bill ready to go to remove the ban on CHL in schools? Think we could get Perry to put it in a special session? There is much talk that he's going to call a session after the Lege overturns his veto of the transportation bill.

I doubt that a special session would include an issue other than the what that session was called for...

Personally, I wouldn't oppose addressing some additional CHL tweeks, but the best time to get those things done is in the regular session...

That transportation bill and the HPV vaccination issue are very hot potato (political) rubs that the govenor and our legislators have created...

They will be consentrating on only that is a special session is called...

Great idea though, but probably not very politically savvy for some...

As Steve said, the only bills that can be filed during a Special Session are those that are germane to the subject matter of the "Call." Perry is strongly on our side, but I would be surprised if he made campus security a part of the Call.

As much as I'd like to get it passed while the issue is hot and we seem to have strong support, a gun bill in a Special Session is going to draw a lot of attention it wouldn't get in a regular session. Plus, there are some things that can be done between now and the 2009 Session that will help passage of expanded CHL authorization.

I agree with Charles. It's not the appropriate time, and if the issue were forced, that wouldn't be constructive in the making of good legislation. We've had several victories in this past session, and I think sticking with the slow-but-steady momentum we have is the best path to take. Inertia is on our side. With other states continuing to pass gun-friendly legislation and more states switching to shall-issue, I only foresee a better environment with examples set in other states to foster positive legislation.

With the recent privacy legislation passing, the people of Texas and our lawmakers are sending a clear message that corporate interests do not take precedence over our fundamental rights as citizens to bear arms and to privacy. As this fact becomes more established with time, I think we will be in an even better position to make positive changes to the law in 2009.

So do I, but passing a "CHL on campus" bill in a special session would be very difficult, even if the Governor would make it part of the Call. If we were to lose the fight, it would be harder to pass in 2009.
