So I have an interview this week for a new job. It's a job in a small coffee shop owned by a friends parents and managed by another friend. If I get the job I'd like to be able to carry while working, but don't know how to go about asking. I don't believe the owners or manager are anti gun, but I know at least the manager is not very familiar with guns even though she's expressed some interest in a home defense gun. So while I trust the manager trusts my experience with guns and safe handling, her general inexperience with guns makes me wonder if she is trusting of the gun itself. Did that sound dumb? Basically I mean that she may not trust that the gun isn't going to go off without a trigger pull, and a trigger pull isn't going to happen with the gun nestled in its on body holster with the safety on. Anyhow, so basically how/when do you ask?

I would never mention or ask permission from an employer to legally carry. I would assume that no matter how pro gun the person is, she will answer no just to avoid the potential liability of officially granting such permission. Besides, every work setting has at least one idiot that can't keep his mouth shut.

If they don't give 30.06 notice, there's no need to ask for an exception. I carried during the interview and they didn't say anything, so I don't worry about it any more than I worry about asking if I should wear boxers or briefs.

Absent verbal or written notice, carry well-concealed and never discuss it at all.

Carry concealed, keep quiet about it and smile. That's all I have to say about this.

Don't ask. < that is a period. If they don't want you to carry, they will tell you, either by written or verbal communication. Otherwise, it is none of their darn business whether you carry or not.

I would just add to read your employee handbook or rules carefully. If you're told not to bring a firearm, that means you've been notified. While you couldn't be arrested, you could definitely be fired.

Just make sure it is not in the employee handbook or on any paperwork you signed or read when you were trained or hired. I would carry to work but our company policy says "weapons" are not allowed to be brought to work which makes it a nono. legally I would probably be ok because there is not 30.06 signs just the gunbuster signs. But from an employee standpoint I would be breaching my contract and fired.

And that's the gist of all of this. You would be legal to carry without notice, but that doesn't say they can't or won't terminate you.

What's more important? Your safety & well being or a job?

I can not carry at work but I choose to be there anyway. I don't believe that I am placing more importance on my job than I am my safety and well being though. I chose to work where I do because it allows me to be with my kids and ensure their safety and well being (I work at my sons school).
If I worked at a coffee shop and had not received notice, I would carry.

one thing to think about.... how big of an area are you going to working in... will you be bumping into your co-workers as you work and move around.... the coffee place here has a small work area and i watch the ladies trying not to bump into each other... figure you probably use a IWB if you have a uniform shirt to wear will it cover okay.... not trying to scare you from not carrying.... if I could carry at work i would... good luck on your interview

That would be a false assumption. I work for a company with hundreds of employees and it explicitly grants CHL holders permission to carry on company property. The company also held a CHL class for employees wanting to get a CHL. And the boss here who made this happen is politically liberal and voted for Obama.
