Hi all, thanks for this fine resource you have here.

I'm an out of state resident that wants to apply for a Texas CHL. I live in NJ.

I'm a bit confused about the process, especially with regard to fingerprinting.

How do I submit my application online to schedule the fingerprinting? The online application asks for a Texas driver license. I don't have one. Therefore, will I have to use a paper application form instead?

Also, about fingerprinting - does the fingerprinting have to be done at a Texas L1 enrollment location? We have morpho livescan fingerprinting in NJ, and I've used them a couple of times for other fingerprinting. I was just wondering if the Texas CHL process had any requirement for the fingerprinting to be done at a Texas location, or if I could do it anywhere in the country that had a Morpho location.

Welcome to the Forum Ryan! Are you planning to move to Texas?

Not immediately, but it's a possibility. I have been offered paid relocation to the DFW area at one time and it comes up ever so often. I didn't take it, but it could come up again. I do visit that area for work, however.

I believe you can use your drivers license you have now, but you have to take the CHL class from a Texas Certified Instructor. Most of the time they will help you with all of your paper work and finger prints.

We have a lot of great instructors on the Forum and I know one will chime in soon. I may be all wrong, but I do know you have to have the Texas CHL Class.

You could leave the communist Country and come down to land of Texas. It would be the best move you ever made.

If you visit DFW often, maybe you could get it set up to take your class with Crossfire Training.

Crossfire is a mod on this forum and a fine lady. She can do the training and your fingerprints at the same time. I'll bet she will have some good advice for you on getting this done.

So just to confirm - I can submit the initial app now via paper and I can submit everything else after I complete the class?

Believe me, I am kicking myself for turning down the last offer I got for paid relocation down there. This state is getting worse by the day, especially if you're a productive citizen and/or gun owner. That's why I am always glad to leave town. Maybe I'll be tempted to stay and not to come back. :)

Yes, that is correct.

Do not send anything to the state until AFTER you take the class.

Why? I've always started the online process before taking the class. It gets the ball rolling. Most instructors I know also recommend to go ahead and start the process early.

He HAS to submit a paper application.
He cannot be fingerprinted until after DPS accepts the application (two weeks, or more)
He is coming from NJ and must take the class and be fingerprinted in Texas
We will fingerprint him on his class day
So, therefore - he MUST complete and submit his application ASAP

This is what I was wondering. The appointment for fingerprints needs to be scheduled in advance, but does it have to be done in Texas?

I know the training must be done in Texas, but IdentGo also has offices here, so is it possible to do the fingerprinting at an out of state location?

I don't mind coming back to be honest, but I'd like to get it done ASAP and I'd hate having to wait until the next time I'm down there, so if I could do the fingerprinting out of state that would be preferred.

When you do things in haste it sometimes cost you more than you want to pay.
