Ok, so I'm a chick. So that means I've fallen prey to all those Facebook quizzes going around. But as much as I love knowing who should play me in a movie, or what my mental age is, I decided to search for gun safety quizzes. Lame I know. I tried picking one that was as minimally left as possible and the only 2 questions I got wrong were:
1) should you make modifications to your defense gun?
A) no, it should be left as it came
B) yes
2) should your handgun and ammo be stored separately?
A) yes
B) no

Ok, so before I give my answers, let's get some others opinions....

Don't know what being a chick has got to do with it but: almost every one of my guns has been modified in some way or another, I even bought a specific gun to have modified to be my bedside "night fighter"; and storing my ammo and guns separately kind of defeats the preparedness that I am shooting for. Now if I store my bulk ammo separate, that's one thing, but as above, just about all of my guns have ammo stored in them.

Buy a Glock and shoot it the way I comes.

If, by "modification" you mean changing out something (like putting night sights on a gun that didn't come with them) or adding something (like adding a light or laser to the gun), then yeah, I'm all for that. I don't defeat "safety" features (though I AM tempted to remove the magzine disconnect thingie on one of my guns), but I will swap out a stock trigger system for one that's faster, surer, lighter. Bottom line, modifications that make the gun more useable are good - modifications that make the gun unsafe are bad.

As far as storing the ammo away from the gun, yes and no. I have guns that are ready to be deployed in an instant - like the pistol by my bedside or the one in the den, and the shotgun in its hidy hole. All are loaded - with extra ammo right there or on the gun itself. But the other weapons and the ammo for them is secured in the safe.

By the way, you're not lame if you're asking good question. Now, if you start asking whether pink guns shoot better than black, blue, or stainless guns.... Well...

Even with Glocks, serious Glock shooters replace the crap plastic factory sights that break with steel sights.

1. The real answer is, yes, if you want to. Why not? Usually, modifying a gun is to make it better, not worse.
2. The real answer is, no, but we all know that's not what they're looking for.

1. There is a huge difference between modify and accessorize. My glocks have night sights and 3.5lb triggers. Some would consider these modifications others would consider them optional equipment. For me modification would be changing the way the equipment was originally designed to work. An example would be modifying a standard 10/22 from semi to full auto. Given this definition I would not modify my defensive weapons.

2. My guns stay loaded with extra loaded mags next to them but they are secured as I have kids in the house. My bulk ammo is in a separate safe than the firearms (this is more of a space issue than anything else).

see, I have heard of alot of people changing out Glock triggers and sights and I see nothing wrong with that. I love my sig the way it is the only thing I'd change on it is the grips. Part of me wants to get pretty black pearl grips, but the whole point of changing them is to get something on there with a bit more texture. So for now I'm looking at hogue grips.

As far as gun and ammo storage, all of our handguns are stored with full mags and one in the chamber in a small gun safe in my husband's closet. We have kids too. The extra ammo is stored beside the safe.

if you have the siglite night sights on your sig you don't need to change a thing

or if it has a Texas on it, those best, too

although if it has a corgi on it, well, I might have to test it to see.

haven't made any modifications to family weapons, accessorized a couple...

all guns loaded, safetied, in safe, readily accessible at night, extra ammo stored out sight and out of reach of children

I will most likely change out the trigger on my 5.25" XD(m) 9mm if I ever get serious about shooting any of the competitions (Steel Challenger, IDPA, XYZ, etc.) Again, modifications that make the gun run better are not only allowed, but encouraged!

Something that's available for the XD and XD(m) series guns is a traction tape that has the facets of the handgrip already cut, so you just clean the old handgrip with some alcohol to get rid of any grease, peel and stick the traction strips as desired. A sheet for my XD(m) ran something like %15, and has held up well for a couple of years so far. You might look and see if something similar is available for the Glock, unless you want the extra padding of a Hogue grip (which is certainly something worth considering if needed).
