Alaska man uses HiPoint to dispatch agressive bear.

Jim Landess and his 17-year-old son woke early on the morning of July 7 to the sound of a brown bear attempting to break into their home in Sterling, Alaska.

I'd still rather have a HiPoint than be stuck with
absolutely nothing which is what our military (in all its' wisdom) provided for this national guardsman.
National Guard soldier mauled by bear at base in Alaska
This happened in Alaska during "land navigation" training. You are given a map, a compass and coordinates to a location that has a letter/code of some type. The reason I am pointing this out is that in almost all instances outside of a war zone, soldiers are not armed. 90% of the time a soldier has a weapon, they are not issued live ammunition for it.
I always thought this was idiotic and dangerous.

The ones I see in action are pretty reliable. They're not pretty and they're not refined but neither is an AK.

I know a guy that has 3 of them and they never miss a beat. Also watched those videos where some guys tried to destroy 2 of them. They had to go to extreme measures to accomplish it.
Wouldn't be my first choice to carry but sure beats throwing rocks.

My FIL has one...he never cleans it or oils it. It has never not fired for him and it doesn't misfeed range ammo. Its ugly and big, but goes bang as good as any gun thrice its price!

HiPoint = Poor man's Glock. Yes, they are ugly yes, they are cheap yes, they are bulky but they are reliable. Don't expect to get 100K+ rounds through one they are usually good for about 10k rounds. Where else are you going to find a NEW American made handgun, with a lifetime warranty, for under $175.00 NIB that's half as reliable as the HiPoint? It fills a niche the other manufacturers have overlooked.
Do I want one? Not really. Would I buy one? Probably not. Would I recommend one? If the person asking about one couldn't afford anything better, yes.
HiPoint pistols are very much better than a slingshot and certainly more deadly than a poke with a sharp stick.

A Hi-Point rifle was used by a Detroit woman who fired at some home invaders
and scared them off.
One thing I find interesting about Hi-Point is that you can use the same magazines
in both the handgun and the rifle.

That's terrible. That was a good bear who'd either not done anything like that before, or had, and was in the process of turning his life around. To be killed just because he was trying to break into a home, probably just to get something to eat, is horrible. Would they have killed him if he was a Polar Bear? I somehow doubt it, but apparently, it's open season on Brown Bears.
