Houston man shot in the head survives with minor injury

A man operating a moving business out of his apartment, opened his door to men he thought were looking for work.
He ended up being shot in the head. He survived with just a small wound (see article for photo)
He talks about not believing it was a real gun and saying he was going to get his bigger gun.
One report that I have not found, mentioned that caliber was why, he was not more seriously hurt.
Or may be it was the angle of the bullet to the head. I remembered hearing that assassins used .22's very effectively at close range.
