I've been seriously considering going with one of the XD/XDM models but in about 3 weeks or so I'll have my renewal from GSSF along with my certificate to buy a new Glock for $425. According to Gallery of Guns they are now coming with 3 magazines as well. That leads to the debate between G17 and G19. The 19 has plenty of capacity, especially with an extra magazine available. The 17 has an extra half inch of barrel, sight radius and muzzle weight to possibly help a little if/when I try some GSSF matches.

Either one is going to have to be OWB carry and cover. I could buy the 19 now and wait a year until the next certificate is available and buy a 17 then. I could buy the 17 now and forget about a 19. I could go with the 19 even for GSSF and forget about the advantage the 17 gives. Any option gives a good carry gun which is the primary goal anyway.

Havent personally handled either one but to me smaller would be little easier to conceal. On round count if you can't get it done with 45 rounds (3 mags) the extra 6 rounds the 17 gives you isnt going to matter. But overall it's which one feels best fit in your hand to me, that's the one I would go with. If both feel good then would go with the 19 just cause smaller and lighter. This is going by your mentioning of mainly looking at a carry gun.

Capacity isn't a concern. Either one alone is more than adequate although I would never carry without a spare mag available just in case there's a mag failure. I like the 34 as well but I'm not that good a shooter. Too much arthritis. I did win one of the prizes in the B group at a GSSF match and came in 2 or 3 places too high to win something in B in another. With a 34 you have to be one of the best though and I don't see that happening without an arthritis cure.

I've got 2-3 weeks until my paperwork arrives to shop for a cover vest. I've got that long to make up my mind which way to go as well. I do enjoy and appreciate the discussion here though. It's like having scores of friends and smart advisers.

Not sure why you have to be better to run a 34? The longer sight radius is more forgiving, and the heavier frame gives lesser perceived recoil.

You don't have to be of course. It's just if you want any chance of winning any of their prizes that you have to be really good, at least as it was 10-12 years ago, when the 34 was in it's own class and only the very top shooters won any prizes. With a 17 I might accidentally fall into the prize range of the B group.

If I could do it over again, I'd get a 19 again for carry. I'd skip the 17 entirely and go straight to the 34 as a competition/nightstand gun.

Can't go wrong with the 19.

G19 is fairly easy to conceal and will do pretty much anything the 17 will do. The sight radius difference between the two isn't much. With the 34 there is quite a bit of difference and would definitely be better than the 19 for competition. I would buy either the 19 or 34. If you are gonna carry it then get the 19 like previous posters mention.

From what I understand about GSSF, With the G34 you can only shoot Competition or Unlimited. (Except... If you are not over 18, you can shoot Am Civ, too.)

If you put a stock Glock G17 upper on the G34 you can shoot Am Civ, Comp, Master stock or Unlimited.

That's one reason I haven't shot in GSSF recently. I only have a couple of G34 now and can't come close to being competitive in Competition or Unlimited. But then again I'm not competitive in any category so what does it matter

It's pretty bad that my goal for my first GSSF match a few years ago was to "not come in last" (I didn't).

If I'm wrong about the GSSF rules for the G34 I'm sure someone will correct me.

That's my story also. I'm not good enough to be a top ten finisher in the G34 classes, unless there are only 9 other shooters, and I want at least a chance of winning something. I also went into it years ago with the goal of not finishing last. I came in 5th or 6th in B which put me in the top half of around 120-130 shooters and I won back my entry fee. The other time I shot I came in 2nd or 3rd to last in A and wished I'd shot a little worse so I'd have won a pistol or at least my entry fee back. Now with some arthritis my goal will be to at least make B somewhere hopefully and just not to come in last regardless.

Most likely I'm going to get a 19 for best carry compromise and in a year when I get another coupon maybe get a 17 for matches or maybe even a 34 since I've sort of always wanted one of those too. I guess there's always the following year's coupon for one or the other too.

You do not have to worry about finishing low in the A category and missing out on prizes. GSSF is now awarding prizes based upon random assignment of the prizes after the top 10 in the category if sufficient entries. So go and enjoy GSSF and don't worry. GSSF also has a Girl's Side Match for the spouses, they award a pistol for every 10 participants.

I know I could but don't know that I ever would try to do a GSSF match with a G26 but I may at least consider it instead of a G19 for my edc gun. It has a good size advantage, perhaps enough to make it a pocket gun at least some of the time. I'll have to try it in my usual cargo pants pocket next time I go to the gun shop if they don't mind.

For whatever reason, I shot my G26 better than my G19 or G17...........odd

Didn't GSSF have a separate division for the G26 also? Not sure...
