When did the US engage in its last naval battle under sail?

Via Clayton Cramer, a good candidate appears to be this battle off the Chinese coast. AFTER WWII (barely).

You'll have to scroll about halfway down the page at the link to find the answer. Lots of interesting stories on that page, including what happened to the US Flag that was flying over Hickam Airfield the day the Japanese attacked.

Thanks for posting this. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. My dad was in the CBI during the war. It was interesting to see the date of the first troops being sent home in the fall of 1945. Dad got home in December 1945.
