Two have died so far. If you have one, hiding it is not good enough, children can still find it and hurt themselves. Be a responsible bean bag chair owner and get a safe.

You would think a 13 yo that plays several instruments would be smart enough not to climb inside a beanbag. Sad.

How does one get stuck in a bean bag chair?
Chas.

I can understand how the boy suffocated. The bean bag is filled with styrofoam pellets and after use the pellets flatten and the bag needs to be topped off. When unzipping the bag to refill, the pellets being charged with static electricity fly out. I assume the pellets got in the boys mouth and nose - suffocating him.

Nope. From the article
Bisson said she never thought twice about the bean bag chair which sat in his room for years. But in 2011, Ian was playing around, unzipped the chair, crawled in, got stuck, and suffocated.

Must be more than this. Can't believe a 13 year old that could open a bean bag, crawl in and then not get out? Perhaps foul play.

I think it's a plausible accident. My guess is its a one way zipper - or whatever you call the zippers that the little clip has to be lifted in order to reverse the zipper. Whatever game he was playing to crawl into and hide in the beanbag, he could have used his fingernail to drag the zippers shut from the inside then couldn't get it to open since the zipper clip needed to be lifted from the outside.
My big question is how a 13 you old couldn't rip bean bag open. I guess it's one of those tragic perfect storm kind of things.

This is why every 13 yo should carry a pocket knife.

So sad. How horrible to find your child that way.

You're going to trust a child who's dumb enough climb inside a beanbag and suffocate himself, with sharp objects?

Pick your poison. Takes longer to bleed out from a pocket knife cut than it does to suffocate in a beanbag.

I don't know how often it happens, but children do suffocate from plastics bags. A bean bag chair is a plastic bag stuffed with polystyrene "beans".

Very sad..
As to the trust a 13 year old with a knife. When my 9 year old goes camping he has his very own utility tool complete with a VERY sharp knife. Now we do home school and we have taught him safety.
He cut himself pretty decently once on his hand, he had disobeyed one of the safety rules we had taught him. No stitches just some very stingy skin glue needed--he is now the most careful 9 year old you have ever seen with a knife.
I hope that by the time he would be 13 he would be able to be trusted with a knife whenever he wanted one.

What is the saying, you learn from what does not kill you.
