I work for a big company, but I work from home. The company has the usual "no weapons anywhere anytime" policy.

Someone I work with lost my home phone number, so he did a Google search for it. He found me on a shooting forum (not this one).

The good news is that he is a shooting enthusiast. The company holds classes for employees and customers from around the world. He offers to take people in these classes to the range. Many of them are from places like the U.K. and have not previously touched a firearm.

He said he has never had a negative reaction, either from the participants or management.

When I had a home office I wondered about that company's "no weapons" policy, but it didn't matter, they laid me off.

My company's policies apply only to company leased or owned facilities. They don't lease or own my home.

They got over all that stuff about whether someone who got a paper cut at home would be injured on the job. It just never came up.

I'm sorry you got laid off. It's my biggest fear. The layoffs have been by product line, without regard to anyone's individual performance.

That layoff was in 2001, been employed and laid off again since then. Some people have all the luck.

Well, I could recommend a local company that hasn't had a layoff in years, but you haven't given me reason to hate you yet.

My theory, based on how often they're in the paper as the location of the arrest of some violent criminal or drug dealer, is that when they're overstaffed they can just stop hiring and wait for enough of their people to get arrested that their staffing level rebalances itself.

...and there are still some people who can't understand why I've steadfastly refused to put in an application there when they pay so much better than my current job.
