I just placed an order for an STI Spartan 1911 from Dawson Precision. It should be at my FFL by the weekend I'll post a report soon as I get it to the range.

oooooooooooooh, I'll be looking forward to hearing those details. What made you choose the Spartan over the other models? Other than the obvious link to "SPARTA"!!!!!! (gotta get the movie "300" when it comes out!)

Actually, I ordered the Spartan because I'm getting all the bang for fewer bucks. This gun has all the features of the Trojan in a plain wrapper. It should be at my FFL today I'll post my impressions after I field strip, clean, and lube it.

I picked up my new STI Spartan yesterday and took it out to the range this afternoon. This gun is fantastic! The fit is awesome, no slack in the lockup and fresh out of the box the slide is buttery smooth. I field stripped and cleaned the gun checking the locking lugs, and inside of the slide. I lubricated everything and put it back together.

At the range, I started out with some Blazer 230 gr FMJ the sights needed some tweaking as it was shooting slightly high and left once I got the sights dialed in I shot a couple of groups for accuracy. At 15 yards I was getting eight shot groups under 3� shooting freestyle. I switched to some 200 gr SWC hand loads that wouldn't fully go into battery every time so I switched to some 230 gr cast lead hand loads that ran very well. I shot some WW 185 gr silvertip and some Federal 230 gr Hydrashock that both fed perfectly . I fired a total of 205 rounds today with the only malfunctions being ammunition related.

I think I have me a keeper here!

Good job. I understand those are as good as the comparable Kimbers & still about $250 - $300 cheaper. I like the looks. Keep us posted.

Very nice. I've been entertaining the thought of getting one of the STI Eagles lately. I'm not a huge 1911 fan, but their pistols seem to have a better appeal to me than the Kimbers do for some reason.

If I'm ever in the market for a 1911, I know where to get it. That Spartan is very nicely priced.

I took the Spartan out this morning I put 265 rounds through it that brings the total to 470 close enough to 500 to consider it broken in. A couple of ammo problems with the old reloads I was shooting. One misfire and one round failed to go completely into battery the gun was very dirty and probably a little dry by then so I didn't call that a full malfunction. several magazines have given me some problems mostly the last round out of an 8 round magazine. A couple fail to lock the slide after the last shot. All factory ammo ran perfectly I shot 230 gr Hydrashock, 230 gr WWB JHP, 230 gr UMC JHP, and some Blazer Brass 230 gr FMJ. Of the JHP ammo the UMC seemed to be the most accurate and the Hydrashock was second there was little difference between all three actually. I am confident enough with this gun to put in the CCW rotation.

Mind if I ask what the cost was? After looking at a few 1911's, I've narrowed it down to a 5" barrel Taurus, S&W, Springfield, STI, Kimber, Colt or Les Baer. I know I forgot one, but I'm on 1911 overload right now.

Looking forward to a range report. What caliber did you get? I'm looking at a 9mm but am undecided since I can reload .45 or .40 once I get a set of dies.

you forgot SIG...... they make a fine full sized 1911, that is in my personal opinion equal to, or better than any you mentioned (including the Para Ordinance you didn't mention either)
