I want to get an AR sometime in the next few weeks. I haven't made up my mind exactly what I want yet. I know I want a "just for fun" rifle. AFAIK I'll only be shooting at the range at 100 yards/meters or less plus some at the indoor 25 yard range nearby. I don't think I'll ever shoot beyond 200 yards. I don't have the eyesight for it. I want good quality that I can enjoy for 15-20 years and when I'm too old to enjoy it pass it along to my grandson who will be 20-25 then to enjoy for another 50 years or so.

I want iron sights and eventually an optic. Down the line I may want to add a light and/or laser. I don't like recoil so I want at least a mid-length system. I'm also debating a SBR but don't know anything about that process. Does having a CHL have any effect on the process? What all does it take to get to buy one?

Ah, I remember the days of just wanting one for fun.

Off the top of my head, the only thing I can think of that having a CHL can effect is that when it comes time to purchase one, if you do so face-to-face in a store in Texas, is that they don't have to call in for the NICS check.

In today's market you can put together a very nice AR for $1500.

For that much, these days you can get a pretty decent rifle. I'm partial to Colt, since that's what I have and you can get one at Walmart of all places. I'm still a relative newbie to the AR15/M4 world. Many other far more experienced folks should be along soon.

I think these usually go for about $1,000 - $1,200 at Walmart.

Something like a Colt, or a Daniel Defense AR, if you are looking for an heirloom quality rifle. Otherwise, any of the popular manufacturers will fit the bill. OR, and here's a novel idea, build your own!

For $1,500.00 you can buy a nice Daniel Defense. It is the top of the line. Not much out there any better. That being said Palmetto State Armory is selling the Colt light weight right now for $799.00 and you cannot beat that deal at all.

Let us know what you get and then post pictures.

I'd go with a Stag 3G rifle. Shoots really nice and if you really want to go with least recoil add JP's low mass BCG and buffer with their adjustaable gas block. The dot on my scope doesn't move.

Now for SBR you'll need a trust (lawyer) and $200 tax stamp and wait. Granted I've read SBR's are going thru in a month now

Now if you can stretch it to $2k get one of these with the low mass setup.

No need for a SBR. Do an AR pistol and put the Sig brace on it. Per ATF perfectly legal to shoot it from the shoulder. Why spend the extra money and create another paper trail?

Been seeing 6920s on the CDNN emails in the $899 range.

That and a quality optic should be very under budget.

Primary Arms in Pearland has some Danial Defense rifles. They had some sort of discount on, but I am not sure if they still do or how good it is.

For the use described, I see no reason to pay for more than anything than a M&P 15 Sport. Can be had for less than $600, leaving money for optic and ammunition.
