so I put a sweater on it.



I'm going on my first ever duck hunt in a bit over a week. I wanted something to soften the gun's outline, but I REALLY wanted something to protect it's finish.

That's my Browning Cynergy O/U under the wrap.

What kind of finish does it have? I'd hate for it to be trapping any moisture or water between the wrap and barrel if it's not a good coating, and just blueing. (Spelling? Bleu? The point is made regardless)

Aside from that, it looks pretty awesome!

Under the wrap, it looks like this:



There's not much opportunity for moisture before the hunt because it's sitting in my gun safe where there is a dehumidifier. Immediately after the hunt, the wrap will come off so I can clean the weapon.

The wrap is pretty much like an ace bandage, with an open weave so it can breathe. This is the wrap I used:

Good job, keep that beauty protected. One of the best things for a duck gun is a good durable coating, but not quite so for an O/U, if you want to keep the classic look. I always lean toward a semi, like a benelli, for waterfowl. Though. I do like a featherweight O/U like a Yildiz for quail and pheaseant, being so loght is nice when you have to carry it around for hours at a time!

If I were worried about the finish, I would go buy myself a cheap pump gun. Nothing is harder on a firearm than duck hunting, IMO. My guns have gotten wet and sometimes muddy on every duck hunt. My O/U stays at the house. I use a 870 Wingmaster pawn shop find or my Beretta A300 Outlander.

I've known a few guys who dropped theirs into mud and water, and I even had a buddy who flipped his kyak trying to get to his blind. It took him hourse to find his shotgun at the bottom of the shallow channel. Another good though, waterproof and floating gun case! Just a thought!

Duck hunting is not for beauty queens (guns). I've fallen into waist deep water with the shotgun going under and driven into the mud. Retrieved it, swished it around in clear water to remove the mud, drained it out and continued hunting. Post hunt cleaning was a bit more detailed as expected but it still works great. Mine has nicks, scratches, scrapes and assorted other marks I like to look at as battle scars.

On the other hand, maybe you are getting invited to easy hunting conditions. Boat ride to a blind and dropped off, hunt for the morning and picked up. My duck hunts were sometimes brutal with plowing through marshes wearing chest waders and dragging decoys, etc.

I used to love duck hunting with my granddad in Arkansas (not too many ducks in West Texas).

Being the young ones, we got to break up the ice on the pond, push the boat under the boat cover, trip over stumps etc etc.

Nothing like cold water down your waiters before you even start the hunt! Never dropped a gun though.

I manage to get mine wet and muddy even on those kind of hunts! Gun gets knocked around in the bottom of the boat, decoys are thrown on top of it... I've just come to the realization that duck hunting is cold, wet, and muddy and my gun is going to get some new wear marks with every hunt.

Apparently, this is going to be a pretty easy hunt.

A friend and coworker is setting it up with the guide. According to the guide, boots & waders are optional.

My friend says it's going to be on agricultural land. I suspect we will be in a blind next to a farmer's pool or something like that.

Also, the guide has a dog or dogs to retrieve the kills.

Don't forget to take your Dale call.

I went on a hunt like that last year... when we got there, we had to move the blind from one end of the pond to another... Off I went to attach the winch cable to the blind so we could move it with the gator... Might as well have been wading! Still was a good time!

I also missed the part where it won't melt to itself or the gun it it get's too hot. Maybe those O/U's don't get very hot.
