Miller intentionally damaged his visa on the way to Pyongyang' to raise government eye brows. He was reportedly moved to a guest house and his detainment did not actually start until five months after he arrived in North Korea.

Miller was sentenced to six years hard labor for committing “hostile acts.” Miller said he was prepared for the torture.

I think it depends on the motivation. I have a young friend whom I mentor who went to NK once on a mission trip. Ostensibly, it was a cultural visit; but his goal, and the goal of the trip organizers, was Christian missionary work. Me? I'm not a big risk-taker and I would never have done it myself. BUT.... I also believe that God's sovereignty does not stop at the North Korean border, and those poor people need Jesus more than anybody else on the planet. So..... while I'm not convinced that the story of the guy in this article is good motivation, neither am I convinced that it was his real reason. And, it is easy for me to believe that he might be willing to make any sacrifice in order to preach the good news and to set the captive free......if that was the real reason he went there.
