How many background checks have you had to have (put up with) in your lifetime ? I get tired of background checks ! At church the pastor says checks are required for new or update events such as ANY new youth outside programs if you are to be checked again . My daughters school (she is 15 , I am 63 .......yea go figure, lol) is requiring a check every year to be a chaperone / aid / mentor , etc . I have had Homeland security checks , I possess a CDL drivers license , Girl Scouts , Foster parent , child advocate for CPS , bla , bla . I am sick of background checks and I'm sure many more are too . I many times feel my integrity / morals / responsibility is questioned without reason . We live in trying times but ...dang ,,,,shouldn't your reputation count for something ?

Don't be upset. You would be more upset if you found out you were working with a child molester in one of the activities. As far as background checks I was drafted in 1967, and had to have a security clearance (top secret) for my specialty in the Artillery (8"), and a psyc eval. After that I went into digital equipment repair and had to have TS clearance thought the rest of my career. I had to do updates every 5 years. At least once a year or more often my parents or someone else would notify me that the FBI was asking about me. I know they kept track for at least 5 years after I retired, perhaps longer, but I wasn't notified by anyone.
The background checks you go through as a member of a school group is only state and nowhere in the depth that a lot of military or federal employees go through.

I was in the USAF for 22 years and carried a very high security clearance. I've been through many
REAL background checks (really background investigations). The piddly little checks you're talking about are nothing but a quick computer records check.

Totally agree with all of you. It does get tiresome, but I know I'm going to pass, so I don't sweat it. I'm a volunteer and my daughter's school for several things and get one done every year for 8 years now just by them. I've had others done for employment and CHL and for a couple other things here and there. Had them done when I was in the Navy for security clearances due to MOS ever since I was 18y. That's a shade over 30 years for me now and I've never failed one. I actually chuckle a little when the school runs one on me because I know it's no where near the what the Navy checked into or what they check for our CHLs. With the exception of a few of the other dads, who are LEO, the school probably couldn't have anyone else around that has been so well vetted.

Yup, like when someone talks to your family and friends.

Talked to? The men in black suits scared the devil out of most of 'em! Had them all wondering what kind of trouble I was in!!!

Can relate to that. What trouble are you in this time, the FBI knocked on my door and wanted to the last time I saw you and where you were living. Did you do something?

Background checks only apply to us serfs. If background checks kept bad people from positions of authority and protected citizens 90% of the government would be in jail.

Very true. This serf has been through many over 2 decades.
For some reason Sandy Berger popped in my mind. This pig should be in prison right now.

While background checks can be annoying there is some good to them. They generally keep the creeps away from kids. But at the same time some people get intimidated by background checks.
I work at a school and starting this year, all parents are required to have a background check to help out with school functions. Well in this case most parents just never got around to doing the background check and so now we have an extreme shortage of parent volunteers. Makes sports events and such a bit more difficult. I guess I'm saying I can see the good and the bad in background checks, haha.

background and security checks... Been through some easy ones, like the CHL and EMS ones, to the annual one I go through as a licensed educator in the state, but I still say that nothing compares to the Top Secret background check I had to do when assigned to the SAC Command Post at Grand Forks AFB in the early 70's. Although I was never actually in the Command Post, because Grand Forks handled nuclear bombers, nuclear missiles, and part of the world-wide tanker force, I remember filling out paper work for more than a few hours before I was done. And, because Pamela was British subject at the time, it was even worse!
Hats off to anyone still having to do that.
But, as one of the DoD investigators told me, as long as I hadn't done anything wrong in all of my life, I'd be OK!

As for as churches goes it is required by insurance. I happen to be one that is all for the background checks when it comes to people working with children.

Any group that doesn't do a background check on folks who work with kids under their auspices, is just asking for serious trouble some time down the road.
