Confirmed Rabid Dog - Austin's Zilker Dog Park

My daughter works at a veterinary clinic and they posted this warning regarding a confirmed rabid dog that was at Zilker Dog Park in Austin, Texas on February 8. If you or your dog was there please be observant of your pet. The dog was there for several hours and the incubation period is 3-6 weeks for rabies and this is 20 days after the incident. Rabid dogs don't always exhibit the classic reactionary behavior and can have what's known as dumb rabies but there are other signs. There is no excuse to not vaccinate a pet, I don't understand why someone would not have it done.

This is a very serious situation for any person or animal that was at that location February 8.

Isn't it required by law for the dog to be vaccinated if at that park?

Considering all the uproar regarding vaccinations causing autism - I find Puma's remark harmless & chuckle worthy. He tweaked the nose of Austinites, not the autistic.
It's impossible to go through life now days without offending someone. PC has become another means of oppression. I quit worrying about it.

Not wanting to offend anyone. I can understand it could do so. I edited the post.
I also thought it was a requirement to show proof of vaccinations at dog parks. By law rabies vaccinations are required for all pets. Some exotic animals can't be immunized. As a kid I experienced what rabid animals can do. An animal (believed to be a fox or skunk) went up and down a bayou in our city and infected many animals. A young boy died of the disease. There was a city wide campaign to vaccinate animals free. My dad participated with his services. On a personal note my father had to go through the old live virus regimen while in India in WWII. He said it was horrible. He was bitten again in the early 1960's by a puppy a client asked him to remove from their back seat. The puppy was 6 months old but had never been vaccinated. I watched him self inject a series of 10 shots that left huge swollen inflamed (and painful) areas on his sides and abdomen. My daughter had to take the prophylactic series about 10 years ago when she was attacked by a stray cat on her back porch in New Braunfels.
