Renewal - How Far Ahead Can I Apply?

Just received my renewal letter (first Texas renewal), but my license doesn't expire for almost 6 months yet.

1. Can I apply for renewal today?
2. If I apply and am approved in, say, March... When will the renewal expire? 5 years from the expiration of my current license or 5 years from March? IOW, do I lose 5 months off the end of my license if I apply "too early"? I'm feeling a bit cheapskate about losing 5+ months after paying that big fee.

CHL-16 is silent about how far in advance I can apply. Just says "on or before the date the license expires".
Search only found answers from 2009 and 2011... Sorry if this is a repeat

TIA :tiphat:

Go ahead and renew. You will lose nothing.

I renewed last February and my license didn't expire until August. My renewed license (that I got last March) expires in August of 2019.

Thanks!!

I was impressed to get a reminder 6 months ahead of expiration.
Better news that I can get it taken care of now and not lose license time.
If you renew a car inspection early, the lost time is a "donation".

Thanks again for the fast and on-point follow up. Much appreciated. :tiphat:

Well... that could not have been any easier.
Hopefully my old prints and photo are ok... If so, it took me less than 10 minutes (and $73.65  ) to renew.

I'm looking forward to my $25 renewal.

Just to close the loop.....

My renewal arrived 30 days after I applied and the expiration date on the renewal is 5 years after the expiration date on my previous license. No time lost by renewing early.

Feels good to know you don't have to worry about it for another 5 years, doesn't it? ;-)
