I am not that knowledgeable on handguns. Would someone please give me your thoughts on what constitutes a good handgun?

I am carrying a S&W sigma 40 VE now. It is to big and the trigger is way to heavy. That is my reason for getting a new one. At least that is what I told my wife anyway. She said go buy another one then. WOOHOO!

Glock 22 or 23...The factory trigger, to me, at 5.5 lbs. works fine...You can certainly dial it in a bit lighter, but I have never seen much of a need personally to do so...

.40, you either love it or hate it...

If you have a standard Glock, it only takes a couple of minutes to replace the standard 5.5 pound connector with a 3.5 pound connector. (Actual trigger pull will likely still be over 4 pounds.)

If you're interested in going this route, you can see beforehand what the difference is by visiting your local gun shop and sampling the trigger pull on one of the long-slide "competition" Glocks, which already come from the factory with the 3.5 connector.

(One caution: if you install a new connector yourself, be sure it's a factory Glock connector. I've heard some of the aftermarket, non-Glock connectors aren't reliable.)

I've personally fired Springfield's XD 40, and quite like it. It's a little snappy, but that's the impression I get about 40's in general. Trigger pull was not bad at all (nothing like my Sigma 9VE, so I hear ya, there), short reset. All the things you like about your Glock & Wesson you'll like about the XD series. plus lots of other things.
try getting a tac light for your Sigma. good luck.

as to your first question. reliability. feels good in your hand. You shoot it well.
personally, I think you could a lot with your Sigma, but if you've had it with it, I'd say either Glock or Springfield would fill that void nicely.

I fired a Smith and Wesson M&P .40 S&W compact version last night and I have to say that the design really makes shooting it a pleasure....very little felt recoil....I honestly thought it was a 9mm.

Michael Bane (host of Shooting Gallery) is a big fan of the M&P, as well.
those things are very customizable, what with the interchangeable back straps.

I like the HK USP 40 compact. Yes the first shot in double action is a little long, but it is not that heavy. But the single action pull is great. To me there is not alot of felt recoil.

The latest generation Taurus Millennium Pro, PT 140 Pro, has a nice trigger and a lifetime warranty for around $300.
Walther P99 compacts have a nice trigger. A SIG P239 has a nice traditional DA/SA trigger as do the CZ75 compacts.
You just have to get out and handle a few of them or better yet shoot them.

You should probably go try the triggers on several guns. All of the ones already mentioned are fine.

In addition, HK and Sig make models with light double action triggers. I believe HL calls theirs LEM (Law enforcement Modification) available to civilians, and Sig Callas theirs DAK.

Whatever you choose, congrats and have fun.

IMO, nothing will match the trigger on a quality 1911 pistol. There are several out there that can be had in 40 cal. Kimber, STI and Para are three that come to mind quickly.

That being said, a Glock would be my second choice because there are lots of trigger options and they are relatively cheap.

If you're convinced you want to stay with 40 Cal, my vote would be for the Glock 23. It's trigger is not up to 1911 standards, but it ain't bad!

The weapon is also ultra reliable. I've put a lot of rounds through mine and never had a glitch. I just prefer 45 acp or 9 mm for carry...

Right now I'm carrying an H&K USP .40 Compact. I miss my 3" kimber, but I love this H&K. I have the LEM mentioned in txi's post and I think you will like it over your Sigma trigger.
