I took my Ar15 to the range this afternoon loaded up 4 mags 3 -55 grain and 1 62 grain. I inserted one of the 55 grain mags and shot one shot.
Aimed again at my target (100yards) and pulled the trigger again. Lined up for the 3rd shot went to pull the trigger and it was locked up /would not move, tried to move the safety it would not move either, so I pulled the bg out and inspected nothing found I looked into the trigger housing could not see anything. I gave up went home and pulled the trigger out and found a primer and some small pieces of brass stuck in the back were the safety shaft is jamming the entire works. Just wanted to know if anyone else ever had this problem. Ammo was the American Eagle 55 grain FMJ the stuff at Academy in the green box. I wished I had know what it was I would have looked for the empty and let American Eagle have it both barrels. only got to shoot 2 shots.

I have not had this happen to me with hundreds of rounds of that very ammo. However, if it did, the rifle is so easy to break down that I probably would have taken it apart to find the problem while still at the range and then try again. It might have been just one bad round.

I haven't had it happen but I have heard other people have the same problem. Not sure what ammo they used. And it was only once or twice.

Very interesting Andy. I've not even heard of such a device before, but I'm not terribly educated at this stuff yet. Still learning all the time it seems.

I've experienced it several times. Once you figure out what causes it, it just takes a few seconds to clear. 5.56 pressure level rounds tend to back primers out now and then.

I did take it apart checked the bcg but was not able to see the primer behind the safety, old eyes and was shooting in the sun

I have never had that happen, but I have noticed primers missing from spent brass several times.

A while back, when using relatively cheap ammo, I had my old Armalite jam up. I was shooting cheap gun show bagged ammo. Some primers were missing from spent brass. I field stripped the bolt and found a small sliver of brass had gotten behind the bolt and was interfering with movement/rotation. Once it was removed, the rifle fired fine. Of course, with that same batch of ammo, I tried to remove an unfired round. The brass came out, but the bullet decided to stay and powder was dumped all inside the receiver. I don't buy that cheap bagged stuff anymore. I have never had that problem again.

I figure these are all the reasons why you do malfunction drills and/or have a backup gun. Mechanical devices can fail even if you do everything right.

Oversize primer pockets? That's the only thing I can think of, as primer backing would, I would think, tend to "re-seat" the spent primer once the shell itself started recoiling against the bolt face. If the pocket itself was oversize, I can imagine it would fall back out again, but other than that, I'm clueless as to how this would happen.

I've never had this happen, nor heard of it happening before this.

It was my first time. I shot M16 in the service back in the 70's and never had anything like that happen. i wished I would have know I would have looked for the spent case. I would have loved to see what happened to it but I guess that what I get for buying bulk ammo.

I should have been more clear. Clearing the weapon is easy - once you know what causes it. I have no idea why the primers backed out. IIRC it only happened on cheaper ammo that used surplus 5.56 cases that had been reloaded by less than top tier companies. For instance, I've never had it happen with Black Hills reloaded 5.56 cases. They only use once-fired Lake City brass?

During a High Power shoot, a guy told me that there were small variations in primer pocket sizes in some 5.56 brass that was not US made. I guess I should have looked more closely, but all I've shot for a long time is heavy match ammo that we purchased in bulk then sold to members of the club. That stuff was all high quality US manufactured.

Anybody know for sure?

I should add this...if you ever plan on having an AR-15 to use for defense purposes, always open it up, shake it out, and inspect it carefully. A spent primer could ruin your day.

Military ammo has staked primer pockets, so it's not likely to happen.
