Have they dropped the defaulted student loan dequalification from the texas chl? I defaulted on a student loan awhile back and keep reading mixed things about being eligible for a texas chl? Anyone know for sure? Thanks guys.

It depends on who the loan was with. From an owed money standpoint, the rules state:

GC §411.172. ELIGIBILITY. (a) A person is eligible for a license to carry a
concealed handgun if the person:
---------------
(10) has not been finally determined to be delinquent in making a child support
payment administered or collected by the attorney general;
(11) has not been finally determined to be delinquent in the payment of a
tax or other money collected by the comptroller, the tax collector of a political
subdivision of the state, or any agency or subdivision of the state

Federal student loan defaults should not affect you I don't believe, but if it was with the State of Texas then you probably won't be eligible.

FINALLY DETERMINED: by a court of law.

i.e. If you were taken to court and a final determination made IN A COURT OF LAW that you are in default to TEXAS, then you would be disqualified. The Federal Government is a different entity.

I don't believe most people in default are actually taken to court, so those cases have not been 'finally determined', legally. Most loans are owed to the federal government, not the State of Texas or a subdivision thereof, and thus should not be considered in the determination of an applicants eligibility to be granted a CHL.

Bottom line in plain english: If you have not been in a court of law or summoned to one for a student loan in default to the State of Texas, you should be cool. Even if you were taken to court and finally determined to be in default to the Federal Government (not Texas), you are not disqualified from being granted a CHL from the state of Texas.

Thank the Lord I only was dumb enough to borrow a few thousand - my sister graduated with like 70k in student loans and debt - for a degree that got her a job paying 16 bucks an hour to work 12 hour shifts for 7 days in a row before having 7 more off - and the night shift on top of that - med lab tech.

Of course, I never graduated either :D

I absolutely agree. Defaulting on a loan or any agreement signals a lack of maturity and responsibility.

I have been found deliquent and have been issued a judgement on an outstanding student loan with the texas higher education board. I have made arrangments post judgment and have been making monthly installments to HH Loans to eliminate the judgment anmount. Will this diqualify me from obtaining a CHL or will the repayments post judgment nullify the delinquency?
