Wonderful story. He was a man of Honor and humility for sure. But he was so much more.
I look at the tragedies that hit during his terms and I do not think that any of the more recent POTUS could have handled them with the courage and grace that G.W. Bush did with the exception of maybe Ronald Reagan.

That was a wonderful article. It's kind and touching things like this that always seem to get overlooked or ignored by the press sadly. I knew Bush was one to visit military personnel often, but this first hand account is really quite emotional.

I had just read that excerpt myself a few hours ago. It reminded me of a visit to the LBJ Library a few years back. I grew up at the fading edge of the "hate LBJ and the war" movement, so never really thought about President Johnson in terms of caring about the soldiers. Then I saw one of the letters he had personally written to a mother whose son died in the Vietnam war, and it was almost as touching as this article.

No matter what we think of them, the men who serve as our leaders are human beings as well. There have been men that held that office that I didn't care for, and I suspect there will be more (maybe even a woman or two that I don't care for); but to decide that they are somehow lesser beings than we are, and to take away any human feelings of compassion and concern from them is a disservice.

I like the reminders like this. Thank you Charles.

Both Presidents George H.W. Bush and George W. Bush fall into the category of a men worthy of significant respect in my opinion. I can honestly say I believe W and I would get along great on a personal level. I agreed with much of what he did and I disagreed with him on some issues. I definitely wish he would have made some different decisions. However, I can say those things about many, if not most, people I greatly respect and like.

There's only one that has walked this earth with whom I completely agree.

That's what a REAL President acts like. No blaming videos that had nothing to do with anything.

Gotta admit that when I read it this morning I did tear up. A very great and humble Commander in Chief.

Ive read a lot of stories about 41 & 43. Though often portrayed as a wimp, 41 was and is much of a man....star athlete, war stud who was shot down, and loving supportive father.

I am an admirer of Dubya who I find very multifaceted. He was and is a rascal with a great sense of humanity. He knows what hard labor is. He worked in the hot and humid Louisiana swamps building board roads.

As a college student he worked with under privileged kids. He was brash, reckless and prone to crazy stunts. Once he took off in a small plane and didnt know much about flying. He bounced all over the air field and almost stalled the plane.

One night Willie Nelson was performing and he sensed something unusual. He looked over his shoulder and there was Dubya and a buddy drunkenly singing backup - startled Willie big time as he had no idea who the drunks were.

And my favorite - Bush's secret service detail was very intimidating and demanding as they were securing a hotel before he arrived.

They commandeered the elevator and one particular agent was hard nosing one of the young bell hops. The poor intimidated kid was shoved in the back corner as Bush and a pack of big burly agents crammed into the elevator. The deadly silence was broken when Bush, noticing the young man holding a camera down by his side, asked - are you wanting a picture of me? The young man terrified of imposing, stuttered and stammered. Bush grabbed the camera and handed it to the bully agent and said, take a few shots of us while he put his arm around the boy's shoulders & posed. For several minutes Bush talked with the boy asking about his family, girlfriend, college, etc.

There are so many overlooked people that Bush always seem to make time for. He is as gracious a man as his father.

I was proud of our country when Reagan, 41 & 42 held office. Now I am ashamed and disillusioned.

He is as real as they come. While he was Governor there was a ceremony in Fort Worth following the mass shooting at the baptist church in 1999 or so. He was asked to speak but declined because he did not wish to politicize the event. A camera man took an image of him in the tunnel of the stadium where the event was held (TCU if I recall). He didn't know anyone was taking his picture. He was giving comfort to a grief stricken family member. No cameras, no press. Just George W. I didn't agree with everything he did as President but I would vote for the man again and again. He truly "gets it". From what I hear, he still makes visits to wounded veterans. He's a good one.
