This past weekend, my family & I visited SA for a quick get-away, and while we were there, my oldest inquired about the Fort Sam Houston Museum. We were going to stop in, but the facility appeared to be a Federal one (it appeared to be a secure U.S. Army base), and I was carrying, so we decided to find other activities to occupy our time, but the question keeps bothering me...

Are the Fort and Museum Federal property? The Fort appears to be the home of the V Army, but it wasn't really marked (just my suspicions).

Also, does anyone have any info regarding carrying while there?

Unless things have changed, the base itself is still active and Federal.

My grandpappy was CO of the Quartermasters there after WWII. The Army was still in "possession" of some of the Alamo land at the end of the war and my grandpappy oversaw the return of that land to the Daughters of Texas, which he always said that made him the last commanding officer of the Alamo.

Since the museum is on the base, and is intended primarily for military personnel, I would expect that all federal rules would apply.

Thanks, Jim. That's pretty much what I expected from what I saw.

The gift shop and museum were built with private money, then ownership was turned over the the Army.

It wouldn't be a "federal facility" under 18 USC 930, because the employees aren't federal employees. But like everything other military installation, the post commander has total say-so about what goes there.

If you have to enter through a guarded gate, then assume no guns are allowed unless you've read differently in the post regulations. If you can drive straight to the parking lot, then "don't ask, don't tell."
