A 32-year-old man who was shopping with at least three children at a Yakima Wal-Mart was the victim of an unprovoked assault when a stranger picked up a metal tee-ball bat and struck him, according to Yakima police.
The victim was not injured, but he did have a concealed weapons permit (and was open carrying), which he immediately put to use, police said.
A store security officer reported hearing a man in the sporting goods department yelling “Get on the ground!” and found one man pointing a pistol at another, who was lying on the floor.
Police arrived a short time later and arrested the 30-year-old suspect, who remains in Yakima County jail in lieu of $30,000 bail set Monday.

You're not allowed to test the bats on other shoppers? How are you supposed to pick the right one to keep in the bedroom, then?

There is no "right" bat for the bedroom. That's what AR-15s and Remington 870s are for.

The right bat is for breaking the stuck window that is the only way to escape the encroaching fire.

Sometimes you want to be quieter, so you don't wake your date.
Though obviously the attacker in the OP picked the wrong bat, since his target didn't report any injuries.

Ok, I'm confused. The guy is open carrying, and another guy tries to take him on with a bat??
Apparently he wasn't very good at rock/paper/scissors. Gun beats Bat every time.

Lesson here, don't take a tee-ball bat to a gunfight. At least pick a full sized bat.
Better yet, don't attack a guy with a gun.

I don't know....... the sound of an aluminum bat on somebody's body is awful satisfying. I love the "PING!" it makes.

warning: ONE moderately bad word toward the end....

To be fair, gun beats most things.

Gun beats bat for sure... Let me share something I read a few years back that got me to think differently about a knife.
What is more lethal / effective... Gun or Knife?
Don't recall the person's name or credentials if any. His opinion was the knife for the following reasons.
1. easily concealed on person or in hand
2. easily deployed
3. lower perceived threat level vs. gun
4. low skill level to use
5. low failure rate
6. never runs out of ammo
Clearly defining lethal / effective can be very subjective or not. Stand-off range and time works against you if knife armed. Lots of +/- for both devices.
That person's comments gave me a new view on knifes I had not thought about before. Maybe this should have it's own thread. Thought I would share anyway.

I'd prefer to stop the threat before it gets within arm's reach if possible.

Not when it's holstered with nothing in the chamber.

Who was arrested, the 32 year old OC guy with a concealed carry permit or the 30 year old suspect?

Says the victim (open carrier) was 32 years old and the suspect that was arrested was 30 years old.
