Off-duty LEO and Open Carry

If a LEO is off duty and has no visible badge/ID, can he openly carry his service weapon?

Here is the actual event today:

At my wife's office today she walks out of her office following a gentleman down the hallway. She immediately notices a semi-automatic pistol in holster, small of back. His shirt was tucked in and no cover shirt and/or no jacket. I.E my wife is aware as to what constitutes concealed carry vs open carry. This was OPEN CARRY with no badge displayed. With her access to personal records via her office she was able discover that his place of employment was a deputy sheriff. This is how she knew he was a LEO. Next she calls me and asked me, I had to say "Don't know"

Thanks,
David

Even if the LEO actually had a badge attached to the front of his belt, I believe the OP is asking is what if no badge is being displayed. Can LEO openly carry a handgun without badge being displayed at all?

There is no law requiring an LEO to display his credentials when open carrying. However, most departments such as mine require us to display our badge when OC. Only time I ever OC out of uniform is when I'm in attending training and even then I have my badge visible.

Thanks Nightmare69 appreciate the response from a LEO

Had heard from a friend that shoots IPDA, that LEO's displayed badge at the events and that their reason was as you stated

But my guess was that it was a department by department policy

Thanks again and looking forward hearing more input on this topic
