lower recoil than expected from 3inch magnum slugs?

Just a little observation. I bought some 600 grain brenneke 3inch black magic magnum slugs for hiking/ backpacking/camping In Montana this summer. Just incase the bear spray fails.
Anyways the most powerful rifle round i shot before was a 300 Winchester mag. I was told to expect worse from my 500 Mossberg with that load.
Not so! It was a heavy load but it wasn't a hard sharp kick like a 300 Winchester and i dare say not much more than my old marlin 336 30 30.
I guess it was kind of like a 45 vs 10mm. More push like the 45 and less snap like the 10.
Anyways good day at the range.

Makes sense. The shotgun i was standing and the savage 300 win mag i was on a bench rest. That might have made the difference. I never could tell the difference standing or bench with the 30 30.

I'd guess the 3 inch magnum round was a slower burning powder, so the recoil impulse was longer than a 300 Win Mag.

Yes, more like a hard shove to the shoulder and right side of the body. Where as the win mag was a sharp hit where the butt made contact with my shoulder. More localized.

IME good form goes a long way shooting 3 inch Magnum anything from a shotgun or any rifle labeled Magnum, Nitro Express, etc.
I 200% recommend a PAST Recoil Shield or similar shooting anything above a .30-06 from the bench. Keep in mind that when shooting 3 Inch Magnum Slugs from the bench, especially the Dixie Slugs/Brenneke type variety, you are producing recoil energy and in some cases muzzle energy levels similar to African Big Game Rifles. I actually find that the African Big Game Rifles I have shot, up to and including a .600 Nitro Express, recoil less than a Remington 870, Mossberg 500, or H&R Single Shot shooting 3 Inch Magnum Slugs.
If you are a flat out recoil lover or just enjoy plinking with 3 Inch Magnum Slugs or African Big Game Rifles, PAST also makes a Double Magnum Recoil Shield that is twice as thick as the standard pad.
Just my .02,

Mine is an H&R Tracker II which weighs all of about 6 pounds. With Brenneke Black Magic Magnum or Brenneke Magnum Crush it is a beast. Like the old saying goes, "It cripples on one end and kills on the other."
