Ok I think I have it narrow down to 3 guns a XD, M&P, or the P99/SW99 all in 9MM. Are there any places in Houston or close by that has these 3 and preferably there compact versions for rent?

There is a place here that has all of them, but only in FS. There prices are $35 for a lane, $10 per gun, and $12 for 50 rds. (can't bring your own). Is that a lot more then it will cost me in H town?

I know Top Gun has XDs - i rented one last year. Not sure about the others

I'll have to check when I return to the shop tomorrow but when I regularly worked at TopGun, we discontinued XD rentals for two reasons. First, people didn't rent them nearly as often as other pistols. Second, we had an abnormally high rate of small parts (usually trigger return springs) failure with our rentals when they were running. I am told Springfield has long since addressed this issue.

It appears the SW99 is out of production. So, if you want one you'll have to pickup existing stock or buy the Walther version. My only quirk with this pistol was it's trigger system. There were too many versions IMHO...All certainly worked but I never liked the position of the decocker. I also thought the traditional DA/SA version had goofy feature which allowed an operator to "stage" the trigger before placing it into the holster. I saw more than a dozen ND's as people on the line "staged" that trigger because they felt the normal trigger pull was too long. Invariably, they would press trigger and more often than not the gun would work as designed when the operator pressed the button further than he originally intended.

TopGun does have the Smith and Wesson M&P in the rental fleet...Both in .40 and 9mm. I think there is a .45ACP version coming for rental as well. As of Sunday, we had one .45ACP version in stock too. I don't get overly excited about new guns any more but I will say the M&P seems to work well. I think Smith learned a lot of lessons with the commecial failures they've had with the Sigma and SW99 series pistols. The Sigma may stay on as Smith's super cheap pistol. As mentioned earlier the SW99 seems to be dead. However, the M&P is a new animal and it seems Smith&Wesson made big improvements and are serious about building great guns again. Overall, I like this new pistol and would recommend it as an alternative to a Glock, HK or Sig pistol.

Of particular interest since you mentioned the compact models, I noticed Smith apparently decided to split the difference between the Glock 26 and Glock 19 wityh their M&P 9c. From shooting and handling this pistol, I think this may be a very good thing. People like me with big hands often find guns like the Glock 26 too small. The compact M&P seems to be "just right." Another point for S&W after building nothing but dogs for my entire lifetime.

I think he's referring to the fact that S&W's Sigma line is a near-copy of Glock's famous design. IIRC, S&W got sued on that one, too, and lost (patent infringement).
