Friend of mine got 2 of these from his uncle who passed away. He asked me to try and find info on them and what they are worth. Just not his style of gun and would like to sell them or trade them for something more his style. Problem is I'm not very good or up on lever action guns. Gun has no maker mark / brand on it. I'm guessing it's a Marlin but it doesn't look like others I find in pics. I guess it could be a conversion model but it looks to be all original and in very good shape. Sorry for crappy pics but comes with a crappy camera. Any info or help on what exactly this is and what it's worth would be so helpful. Posted links to the pics so they retain size instead of embedding them taking up so much space.

Well it's not a Marlin just noticed Winchester proof mark on receiver.


Edited: Well it is a conversion from everything I can find and see. Called my friend and ends up the other one is a Winchester 25-20. So I guess back in the day his uncle had this one converted to a 256 Winchester. He is bring the 25-20 by tomorrow so can take pics of it, he says he as clean or cleaner then the 256 listed here.

I'm grasping here, but it sure looks like a very early Model 94. I say that based on only the curve of the rear buttstock, and the tangent peep sight. I'm surprised there isn't Winchester splattered on the barrel somewhere.

But that in a .256 Winchester magnum? That's some varmit round. I really don't know. Please post pics for that 25-20 when you can PBR. Interesting.

Ok well found little more info on it, decided to take the rear site off after seeing the Winchester proof mark and it is a model 1892. I'm guessing it was probably originally a 25-20 and then was re-chambered in early 60's to 256 thus why no markings on barrel other than the caliber. Searching the serial number 871xxx it shows to been produced in 1918. Which judging the condition no way would I have guessed it was almost 100 yrs old. He is bringing the 25-20 over tomorrow as long as no flooding or major rain so I can take pics and inspect it. Also has couple other guns he should be getting soon from the same uncle, he was a collector and dealer back in the 40's to 70's. Unsure what all he will be getting but these two are interesting for sure.

No kidding! Very interesting! I had an 1892 chambered for .44-40 when I was a teenager. My favorite gun. i started to say 1892 because the locking lugs that go through the bolt(from your photo looking down on the bolt) looked like exactly what I had. But gosh, that, for me was going back in memory to 1963....sometime back.

And he's getting more? Can't wait to see those pics for sure!
