Below is the txt of an email I just sent to CHL Office in Austin:

Anyone want to speculate on the answer?

Hello,

My current license expires on my birthday of March 22, 2008 and at that date I will be 60 years old.

When I do my renewal application (sometime in December 07) will I pay the 70.00 of age 59 or the 35.00 of age 60 (which is when my current license expires)?

Additionally, I am a Vietnam Veteran and with the passage of the new bill that reduces the fees for Vets such as me by 50% as of Sept 1, 2007,.... what will I be paying?

Will I pay 70.00 for a renewal -or-
Will I pay 35.00 for a 60 & over renewal -or-
Will I pay 17.50 for a 60 & over AND Veteran renewal -or-
Will I pay 35.00 for a Veteran renewal under 60 years old?

Will these options be selectable on the online renewal portion of the Website?

Thank you,

BTW - I have included a link for Free Certified Copies of your DD-214's further down in this thread for those that may need them.

Just guessing but I think they will tell you they don't know yet.

I'm thinking it will be $17.50 when they finally iron it out.

I believe that Veterans fee reduction will go into effect on Sept 1, 2007

I believe he's going to have to go ahead and fork over the $35 for the renewal...

Besides, I have not heard how we (Veteran's) are suppose to qualify for this fee reduction yet...I am assuming the initial and renewal process we will have to include in our packages a certified copy of our DD-214's...

If that is as simple as it'll gets (I'm really hoping so!), I know for some that thay might not have their DD-214's handy...

I sent off for a copy of mine from the records archive folks and have it in the safe...I need to go back and see how I did that a few years ago...That way I can note the address and any contact info (here) for those needing to recover this document...

I cant imagine that it would be anymore involved than that. I don't know about certification. i haven't sen mine in 30 years. We might need to sign them or even notorize the form. Which is more than the VA ever asked as proof.

You're right, I knew you were good later on this year...

It was at the time unclear what the DPS CHL folks would actually want, because that has not been fully explained to us as yet...

Are we suppose to wait till we renew again to submit, or can we be proactive, and get the information to them, so they can have that already taken care of...

But we're pretty smart...I figured the only thing they'll need to have is for us to submit a copy of that DD-214 and keep it on file...

"Wife-Unit" just had to submit her status as a naturalized citizen, again, because they, DPS, failed to keep that information on file, so we sent them a copy of her passport...They said that was good enough to have the process continue...

I only mention this because I believe the DPS CHL office is doing things to keep the process/investigation costs down, especially for renewals...

They'll let us know I suppose...

Who in town keeps a copy of our DD214? I never did give anyone a copy and keep the originals stashed. My local VA Rep. has a copy though, just in case. Nice to see a price reduction for Vets!!

Here's the answer from DPS CHL

Got the answer from DPS CHL today:

IF YOU CHOOSE TO RENEW BEFORE YOUR 60TH BIRTHDAY THEN YOU WILL PAY $70.00
AS OF TODAY WE DO NOT HAVE ANY SPECIAL CONDITIONS FOR VETERANS.

No Signature or nothing!
Seems like they are Mad that they will have more work to do to get this Veteran thing going!

Anyway, it answers my question.....however incorrectly.....

I will pay 35.00 (NOT 70.00) because the bill goes into effect Sept 1st, 2007 for Veteran Fee Reduction whether they like it or not!

And......five years later I will pay 17.50 (unless they go up on their fees!).

I love weasel answers like that. "As of today . . ." Actually the law has passed, so the special conditions do exist, even if they are not effective until September 1.

It's kind of like when they say, essentially, "We don't care what the law says, it's the intent . . ."

And no acknowledgement of the actual question about the timing of the renewal.
