I know that this is covered, but, what combination of Non-resident licenses in conjunction with the Texas CHL will provide the most 'coverage' for travelling?

Also - does it reflect 'strangely' if you have a bunch of CHL's in your wallet? I take it that there are no legal ramifications, but would it subject you to additional or extra scrutiny?

Try http://www.handgunlaws.us or http://www.packing.org. I don't know about 'most' coverage. TX alone has gotten much better. Personally, I picked up a Utah license so I could get Washington state. I recommend you identify which states you are most likely to visit and get your NR licenses to cover you there.

Seburiel, The short answer to your question is Utah, but it only gets you Ohio and Washington. There are plenty of instructors here in Texas qualified to give the required course and test.

The long answer. To the best of my knowledge, your Texas CHL will get you into 28 states, via reciprocity agreements, to include; Arizona, Alabama, Arkansas, Colorado, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Kansas, Louisiana, Michigan, , Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, New Mexico, North Carolina, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Utah, Virginia, and Wyoming.

It will also get you into Minnesota because their laws state that a Texas CHL is recognized even though we don’t have a reciprocity agreement wit them, which gets you up to 29.

There are 2 free states (no CHL Needed) which include Vermont and Alaska, so now you are up to 31 with just your Texas CHL.

The next best was Florida, but it has become redundant, so now Utah is the best non-resident CHL to have and it adds Ohio and Washington (not DC) to the list, which puts you up to 33 states.

Then there are a number of states that will let you have a non-resident CHL via mail in application, but they only add that one state in particular, as all the others states they might get you into are covered by Texas or Utah. These include the following;

New Hampshire ($20 for 4 years)
Connecticut ($40 for 5 years)
Maine ($60 for 4 years)
Massachusetts ($100 for 1 years = a total rip off)

Then there are some states that will give you a non-resident CHL, but require you to make application and/or take a course in state, but again, they will only get you into that particular state as all the others states they might get you into are covered by Texas or Utah. These include; Nevada, Iowa, and Rhode Island. This would only add 3 more and would appear to be expensive to get considering travel and lodging.

Presently it looks like Nevada is working on recognizing a Texas CHL. If so, then a Texas and Utah CHL would get you in to a total of 34 states. There is also the possibility that Nebraska and Wisconsin may soon have a CHL law, but it is too early to know which other states’ CHLs they may recognize.

Presently West Virginia has pretty broad open carry and Oregon, Nebraska and Nevada have limited open carry. I am not however sold on open carry myself.

States that offer a CHL, but do not currently recognize a Texas CHL, and usually no one else’s either, are; California, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, and West Virginia. Don’t hold your breath on any of theses clowns getting with the program.

States that are supposed to have provisions to issue CHLs, but never really do are Hawaii, Maryland, and Washington DC.

I have 7 CHLs, including Texas and can, at this time, get into 36 states not including the open carry states. This is about as far as I can reasonably go. I am just waiting on more reciprocity agreements. The Florida and Pennsylvania CHLs I have are now redundant and I am hoping that my Utah CHL will soon become redundant.

I don’t see a National reciprocity law on the horizon and not even sure I would want one if the Feds are going to set the standards, but it would be sweet revenge to carry legally in California, New York and DC. : )

The more that I read about the Utah one makes me want to get it. But then again, I dont travel much out of the Great State of Texas. So I guess for me it would not be worth it. At least for now. Maybe down the road. TEX thanks for all of the info on which state covers what.

I don't see how anyone would know what you had in your wallet. You only need to present the appropriate one for the state that you are in.

One downside of getting out-of-state CHLs is that in some states, newspapers and TV station web sites have obtained lists of CHL holders and published them.
