That is so messed up on so many levels. You report an armed robbery and no cops show up. Sounds like Dallas needs a new Police Chief.

I talked to a DPD patrol officer and he said they were having more people leaving than being hired on. So they definitely have a manpower issue. This is also an excellent story for how you are your own first responder. Not much you can do when you start off with a gun pointed at your face though. Police can pick up the pieces afterwards (evidently if they show up), but it will be too late to save you. I grew up in the country so I've known that since I was a little kid. Call the police or fire department for sure, but you've got to take care of yourself until they get there.

That's worth printing and posting over the blackboard in every school in the country.

It is the police's responsibility to draw the chalk outline. It is YOUR responsibility to make sure it's not your outline.

That's pretty memorable too, and true!

I can''t take credit for it. I stole it from someone else, possibly even on this forum.

Well I'm going to steal it from you, so don't feel bad. Hadn't ever heard it put that way.

This, of course, illustrates a great axiom of the universe...law enforcement, for all of their wonderful work and efforts, are largely responders to an event, not preventors of the event. Except, of course, for their general deterrent effect.
I drive all around the city about my business on a daily basis and 0% of the time do I have a law enforcement officer there with me to protect me from an attack. However, I am there 100% of the time. That makes me my best protector of me at the spur of the moment. Therefore I expect me to be just as well equipped to protect me as a LEO.
So even if a police department was at its peak, they could not prevent an attack. Only you can do so, or defend against it, at that instant.
