Child care centers, certain laboratories and all early college high schools on El Paso Community College campuses will be gun-free zones once a new state law allowing concealed handguns on college campuses goes into effect, EPCC Police Chief Jose Ramirez said.

El Paso Community College offers initial and renewal CHL classes. I can't tell if these are open to everyone or just students in their Law Enforcement Training Academy.

The courses are open to anyone just like taking a motorcycle safety course.
I'm looking forward to the public comment portion of this endeavor. I plan on being there.

Campus Carry is not extended to Community Colleges until January 1, 2017, if I remember correctly. Until then, the entire campus is a gun free zone, not just the specified places.

That is mostly correct. A school can allow CC in their buildings now if they desire. They do not have to wait until 1.1.17. I guess they can allow people to carry only in certain buildings and begin this as early as they wish.

You guys need to check your dates. August 1, 2016 and 2017 are the effective dates.

You are correct. Community College effective date is 1 August 2017 rather than 1 January.

I believe what the OP is referring to is a CHL Class that is offered at the College, not concealed carry at the college itself. This is allowed, as it is for a school approved activity with firearms. The community college I attended years back actually had their own indoor range for the Criminal Justice classes & police academy, and they even had college-owned S&W revolvers for the students (yes, this was awhile back).
The first link provided by yhe OP discussed their proposed policy & plan to implement it by the 1 Aug 2017 effective date; the second link is likely an out of date web page, as it referred to a '12-hour initial class', & a '4-hour renewal class'.

My primary intent in the OP was to note that El Paso Comm College was working on their concealed carry rules, and the restrictions they are contemplating weren't as widely cast as I might have feared -- altho what is it with child care centers? And I suspect most labs do not actually have anything in them that having a pistol presents a true safety hazard -- not that many MRIs laying around, I think.

But while looking at that, I stumbled over the fact that they also offered concealed carry classes, so maybe they were already clued in a little bit about what CHL actually entails...unlike certain larger universities...
