In comments that appeared to shock even many of those involved in Syria policy elsewhere in the government, Gen. Lloyd J. Austin III, the head of the U.S. Central Command, told Congress on Wednesday that only “four or five” trainees from the program, a $500 million plan officially launched in December to prepare as many as 5,400 fighters this year, have ended up “in the fight” inside Syria.
Meanwhile, millions of Syrians, and Iraqis, and Turks, and other surge into Europe..... And we remember the old counterintelligence rule of refugees and displaced persons: one in ten is not what he seems. Indeed, it is a dead certainty that ISIL, the Syrian Assad government, the Iranian theokleptocracy, and other bad actors each have a higher percentage of agents in that “refugee” surge than the yield percentage the US gets out of its 5,400, or 500, alleged freedom fighters.

I believe it was closer to $42 million of $500 million that was actually spent. Nonetheless, it's not acost effective or successful endeavor.

True, as I understand it $500 million was allocated for the program, so I assume if the program continues future training will be paid for out of that amount and the unit cost will decrease. I amended the title to reflect this.

The article linked to didn't give the actual amount, just the program total. I wondered how much was actually spent but haven't seen that anywhere. Still, given your $60 million that's as much as $15 million per trainee if there were actually four graduates (the general doesn't know if there were 4 or 5).

BTW, I don't necessarily agree with all his rhetoric, which is one reason why I highlighted what I thought was actually relevant in that paragraph in red.
