I have a 2012 Dodge 3500 1 ton mega cab with 39,000 miles. I need to buy my 3rd set of tires. What do you recommend? Right now I have 35 in Xtreme MT2 PRO COMP TRI-PLY. I rotate my tires every 5000 miles and I don't race around. I do play in the mud every now and again. Is less then 20,000 on a set of tires standard?

I run Nitto Terra Grapplers on my 04 Dodge 2500 Quad Cab Diesel. I get about 60,000 miles on a set and I'm on my 3rd set.

They give me much better wet & dry traction than the Michelins that came on the truck and they're quieter, to boot. The tread is plenty aggressive for my off-road use.

I have almost 54,000 on mine, planning to get my 2nd set around December. Quite in town, no vibration. Great on wet stuff.

Ditto on the Nitto Terra Grapplers. I am running the all terrains on my 4wd Tundra. Just over 35K on them and they look good for plenty more.

If you don't need real mud tires I'm a big fan of BFG ATs.

I drive an 04 Ram 3500 with 400,000 miles on her. The best I've gotten is with BFG KOs and the Cooper ATRs.

I used a set of Firestone Destination MT's for a couple years and got around 30-35k out of them on my Titan. I don't do a lot of off road stuff, but they sure came in handy when I did. They're nothing super fancy, but they got me out of a few tough spots. I've had the regular AT's for my last one or two sets and am thinking about going back to the MT's for my next set.

I run a Chevy 2500 diesel with Cooper Discoverer AT/3, and a suburban with Hankook Dynapro's for a quieter, smoother ride. I will probably fully switch over to Hankook Dyna's due to the far superior performance I've experienced with them. I tried:

BFG - Not enough on road traction, I was always skidding and chirping them.
Hercules - Great tires, but they wore very quickly, and walked a bit on me.
Rocky Mountain's - Wore the shoulders too quickly which is the only real traction, though great traction off-road when new.
Nitto - Just way too noisy for my taste.
Michelin - Too pricy, and too soft of tread. Loss chunks of tread on oilfield roads.
Duelers - Terrible traction, and always left me spinning tires, thought they lasted forever, unfortunately.
Hankook - Great traction, great handling, superior cornering, great all the way around.
Cooper - Decent traction, held up well, but not quite as good as my hankooks as far as traction and ride comfort.
Pirelli - Didn't leave me enough traction off-road, but offered great on road performance.
Yokohama - I had problems with spontaneous combustion's. Not sure why, but I blew out all but one I bought with half life left.

All the tires listed above were off road variants that were 10 ply. Just my experience with them in the past few years.

Just put a new set of Nitto Terra Grappler G2's on my Titan. They're basically the same look as the AT's, but supposed to have better tread wear and whatever second generation improvements they claim.

Discount Tire gave them to me for same price as the original AT's, so I gave them a spin.

I must admit, I really like how they ride. No vibration and very little noise for brand new, deep tread. I don't recall my AT's making much noise when they were new, but I have to say these G2's really feel good on corners. I've only put about 100 highway miles on them so far, including a 85mph run on the tollway on the way home from Discount and so far, so good.

Going to get into some slick stuff this weekend and then driving about 15 miles down on PINS the following weekend, so I'll know very soon if they keep me moving like my last set.

If you need REAL (ie EXTREME) off road tires then Interco is your answer, ie Super Swamper TSL, TSL-SX, Bogger and their other extreme tires, it's all about compromise, for a good option, like mentioned, the BFG AT tires are nice for everyday use. You've gotta look at time spent off road versus on road and then go from there, same with a performance car tire, ie track use versus street use, how much performance ($$$) do you want versus longevity?

I went back to the shop where I bought them and we discussed the short life of the tire they agreed and are prorating them at 50%

Gak... I've got a 3500 (6k miles) - yours is eating tires every 12k or so.. I sure hope that's not the norm - it's running through tires like a sports car.

That would be a new set of tires every year for me. I could not afford that and would be looking for a different tire after the first set wore out.
