Got a question for everyone. I am a current CHL holder in Tennessee. It is where I currently live as I am stationed at Fort Campbell. I also have a TN drivers license. I will be stationed at Fort Hood next spring and will be switching back to a TX drivers license, as I am originally from East Texas. Will I still be allowed to carry while I am applying for my Texas permit, since Texas honors my Tennessee permit? I know there are special rules for military so would it be better to keep my TN drivers license until I get my Texas CHL? That way I can still carry as an out of state permit holder.

As long as TN considers your license valid after you move, you're in good shape.

If so, Texas will honor your TN license, even with a TXDL.

The only "gotcha" is the federal gun free school zones. You must be licensed in the state the school zone is located to qualify for that exemption.

If TN issues a non resident license you need to switch to a non resident to be valid in TX once your residence / DL changes. TX will arrest you if carrying on a TN resident license if not a resident of TN.

Have a close friend who came back from WA last year with only a WA permit. That was the answer he got from TX DPS.

Get a Florida permit. This will take care of everything but the GFSZ mess.

I had CA, UT and FL permits. Nobody recognizes CA permits and CA doesn't recognize anyone's. I tried to apply for a TX permit pending the move, using my then CA address but in the event, it just screwed everything up. The FL and UT permits had me covered, other than as noted.

Where you are a resident of is somewhat subjective, especially during a move, and is even more nebulous for active duty military.

You have 30 days, I think, to apply for a TX driver's license, if you need to. Active duty military don't have to.

I am hoping to retire while at Hood and then moving back to East Texas, so it would be better if I go ahead and switch to Texas licenses on both accounts. I am fairly certain I can get my Texas CHL (Soon to be HL ) while still having a Tennessee drivers license. This would be my best option as it makes my TN CHL still valid while carrying in Texas, until I get the Texas CHL. Just didn't know how accurate this is.

When I applied from CA, I couldn't take the required course in Texas before I moved, so when I got here and took the course, and tried to finish up, it confused the folks in Austin, or the computer or something. The paperwork didn't match up somehow and they sat around scratching their heads until I called and set things right.

Keep it simple, is my suggestion.

Is that something specific to TN permits? I ask because I held (still do) a VA resident CHP and after moving to TX was able to utilize that based on my calls to both TX DPS and VA State Police. VA specifically stated that a valid permit remains so when you move unless for another reason the permit is revoked or suspended. I did eventually get my TX CHL but as far as I know and have been told, my VA permit remains valid until it expires, at which point I'd have to renew as a non-resident.

If you keep your TN DL and CHL, you can carry in TX. The only small issue is school zones.

The moment you change your DL to TX, your TN resident CHL is no longer honored here in TX. You would be carrying without a license. If you can switch to a TN non-resident license (I didn't check TN law), you would not be able to carry during the time between changing your DL to TX and the day you received your updated TN non-resident license, UNLESS you had a reciprocal non-resident permit from another State. JALLEN suggested FL. I would recommend AZ, since it much cheaper than FL and gets you Nevada reciprocity.

No... My buddy had a WA resident permit.
WA told him that his permit was still valid until it expired.
TX DPS told him that the moment he was no longer a WA resident, they would no longer honor a permit he was not qualified (at that moment) to hold, regardless of whether WA said it was still valid.

Sounds as if DPS gave different answers to the same question.
Maybe there is something different about the WA resident permit and the VA resident permit.?

Go ahead and get the TX LTC (License To Carry, used to be CHL until this legislature). The state fee for AD Military is $0.

I am assuming your screen name implies combat with a Cav unit, which one?

I have been with 3/17, 6/6, and 7/17 CAV. I deployed with the first two.

Cav has always been both my favorite customers and respected protectors.

I've found that retirement was not as scary as I had feared. However, you will need to prepare carefully. I retired in 2012 and found the Army's program to be very helpful. Still, you have a lot of work to do in less than a year.
