I just did the poll on how long it took to get your CHL processed and delivered. While I was responding to that a question poped into my head.

I will renew next year. Just curious what would happen if the renewal did not arrive before the current one expired. I will start that ball rolling 6 months before my birthday so there SHOULD be plenty of time. But still, it is not a perfect world and anything can happen.

So. If there is a problem and the renewal doen't arrive in time are you on the sidelines till it shows up?

My wife & I took our initial class together & submitted to the DPS at the same time. As my b-day/renewal date is is four months before hers, combined w/ the requirement that you can't take the renewal class prior to 6 months before your expiration, left only a 2 month window in which we could take the class together and submit for renewal. Renewal packets were mailed the same day. Renewals were supposedley running 45 days at the time but of course in my case it went beyond that. My license expired a week before I received the renewal. Longest week I ever spent and never felt so naked in my life. As long as I was with the wife though we were ok. BTW, her renewal came the day before mine expired, 4 months before hers was to expire. HB1815 will ease that problem to some extent.

Fraid so. You cannot carry with an expired license. Even if you have already taken the class and are just waiting on the plastic.

Many people have gotten a Utah license as a backup, for just such an occasion. It is cheap, expires 5 years from the issue date (not your birthday), and you do NOT have to take a class to renew it.

You should have at least 1 non-resident concealed firearm permit from another state that has reciprocity with TX.
If my TX CHL expired (or was lost), My Utah non-resident CFP would allow me to continue carrying my pistol without interuption.

Now if I can just get Utah to actually process our applications that have actually been in their possession for way over 90 days already...

HB1815 was the bill that will become law Sept. 1, 2007 that says you can carry a concealed handgun in your vehicle (or a vehicle under your control) unless you are engaged in criminal activity.
