A couple months ago Charles let me try his new Springfield 1911 in .38 Super. I took the bait. ;-) To say the least I liked it, and even managed to classify ESP SS in IDPA  . But, as he is fond of quoting me, :anamatedbanana I said "I don't need a .38 Super" (or words to that effect). After that he would, every now and then, casually :reddevil remind me how well I did with it, etc.

Fast forward -- at the GRB a couple weeks ago I bought a new full size Colt 1911 in .38 Super. Yesterday I put the first 100 rounds through it. After a couple magazines when a suspected last burr was making life miserable, it straightened out and functioned great! Shot 100 +P's (all I could find when I went to the Pasadena show later), and some of Charles hand loads. I fired a bunch at the 'zero down' on an IDPA target, and only had 2 or 3 outside that circle. I also shot 2 mags worth of head shots, and got them all. The distance wasn't great, probably 7 yards or so.

.38 Super has been referred to by some as "9 MM on steroids". From what I've heard and read it is at least a respectable defensive round, which is my main concern. But now competition seems like it will be a bit more fun!

:cheers2:

Pure-"D" genu-ine evil.

Congrats, Marc. I've followed your conversations here about buying one, but didn't know you'd taken the plunge. Outta curiousity, what were the commercial rounds you picked up at the show going for?

Skippr,
I found them at the Pasadena Gunshow. As far as I could tell only 1 outfit had any .38 Super at all. When I found them, they had about 10 boxes of Remington +P. I can't remember the bullet weight off hand.
Anyway, they had 3 boxes marked, I think, $ 15.95, and the rest we marked $ 16.85 or some such. I asked the guy about it, and he said they probably had just not gotten the price changed on the 3 with the lower price. But when I picked up 6 boxes he gave them all to me at the lower price. :woohoo

BTW, he also had a fair number of boxes from other manufacturers. The ones from Italy and Mexico I just didn't want to chance. There were some other U.S. ones, but I can't remember specifically who.

Let's see....

I have been planning on getting a better 1911(probably Kimber Custom) and having trigger job done on it and Tru-Glo TFO sites mounted. I borrow Charles TRS with the Ed Vandenberg trigger job for a match and now I NEED a better 1911 with a trigger job.

I have been tenatatively considering a 1911 in 38 Super for an ESP gun...
Guess who ISN'T gonna ask to try out Charles's?

I have a Colt Govt. Model 1911 in .38 Super. It is the newer model that is polished SS! (Bling Bling). I doubt that it will ever come out of the custom Colt Presentation Box that I got for it, but if it does, it will be my BBQ gun when Texas passes Open Carry!
