We have included Senator Thompson and his family in our prayers. Rest in peace Senator and God bless.

I liked the guy, but he wasn't much of a lawyer I guess.

Why do you say that? He was involved in some high profile cases. Watergate for one. He also helped take down Ray Blanton for selling pardons.

As lead attorney for the Republicans during Watergate, he is the one who introduced the fact that Nixon had a secret taping system. He said he assumed the tapes would exonerate Nixon. He obviously asked the question without knowing the answer. He opened a big can of worms that resulted in a Presidential resignation.

He knew the answer and knew the Democrats knew the answer.

My recollection is that Butterfield had testified to the existence of the tapes several days before. Thompson wanted the fact known to Nixon before said anything contrary.

Well, I apologize . I have believed a myth, partially perpetuated by Thompson himself, that he was responsible.

He did state publicly that he thought the tapes would exonerate the the President because he believed the White House when he was told that the inquiry was purely political. Whether that was true or not is certainly up for debate.
