The mixing of genes that has created the coywolf has been more rapid, pervasive and transformational than many once thought. Javier Monzón, who worked until recently at Stony Brook University in New York state (he is now at Pepperdine University, in California) studied the genetic make-up of 437 of the animals, in ten north-eastern states plus Ontario. He worked out that, though coyote DNA dominates, a tenth of the average coywolf’s genetic material is dog and a quarter is wolf.

Wow - Very interesting read. I think we might have some sort of pack of Wild Dog/Coyote mix near our apartments in Webster. They howl/yip at night alot of times and it sounds very very close to a pack of coyotes.

I had once a GS dog, a petite GS compared to my current Laika GS. She used howl at night. Laika never did that. She is great at barking though.

We have what we call coy dogs. They don't seem to be as wary of humans or dogs as a pure bred yote.

Same here. They're pretty darn bold, and not scared of me, up until they see muzzle flash and a loud bang.

My Great Dane howled at sirens, when I howled, and when he heard coyotes at night.

I had a Coyote/German Shepherd mix when I was in college. Great dog. Her name was Rikki. We caught her and tamed her. She had been living wild in the hills of El Paso up behind our house.

Nope my shorty GS, Jackie. 100% she looked like a GS. She was very furious with strangers.
